Tennis
Tennis is a racquet sport that is usually played outdoors with a felt-covered ball and a large racquet composed of a graphite or aluminum outer frame filled with a special type of plastic "string". The rules are fairly nuanced but can be easily summarized: hit the ball over the net to your opponent's side before it bounces twice on your side. Tennis can be played as either singles (one-on-one) or doubles (2-on-2). In doubles, the court is slightly wider (by approximately 10 feet), which allows more room for partners to maneuver. The basic strategy of tennis is simple: Hit the ball where your opponent is not, with a powerful shot past him or a well-placed one that he cannot reach before the ball bounces twice.

Eligibility Rules
The program of Intramural Sports at Dartmouth was founded in 1927. Its success is due primarily to the cooperation and enthusiasm of the more than 5,500 participations in the team and individual activities each year. Operated by the Dartmouth College Physical Education and Recreation Department, the Intramural Sports Program is continually changing to reflect the interests of the student body. Its goal is to organize recreational programs which will provide opportunities for students, faculty and staff; and at the same time, encourage a spirit of participation, friendliness, fitness, teamwork and sportsmanship consistent with the aims of a liberal arts education. Back to Top The Intramural Sports Program The Intramural Department, located in Room 108 Alumni Gym, directs and conducts the intramural program for Co-Ed, Fraternities and Sororities, dormitories, graduate schools, faculty, staff and sometimes a mixture of all. Anyone may sign up as a team or individual. All dormitories, Co-Ed, Fraternities and Sororities appoint a "Sport Chair". The Sports Chair is responsible for the unit's organization, its prompt appearance at each contest, the dissemination of vital information and rules to the unit's participants and the unit's conduct during the contest. Making this task easier, all information is sent from the IM office via Blitzmail.
