CANADIAN SKI MUSEUM Located on Sussex Drive, the Canadian Ski Museum offers visitors a chance to trace the history of skiing from its roots 5000 years ago in Europe to its modern-day status as one of the country's favourite winter pastimes. Here you will find a large assortment of all manner of equipment used over the years in the sport, from ancient poles, bindings and skis right up to the most scientifically advanced eqipment on the market today. There are displays honouring the great Canadian skiers of the past, and the library contains a large collection of photographs, books, periodicals and records of the sport that has gone a long way towards making winters in this country more bearable.
CURRENCY MUSEUM Located in the Bank Of Canada, the Currency Museum certainly has no trouble getting people interested in its main attraction - the history of the usage and development of our country's currency system from beaver pelts and wampum of the earliest days of European settlement to the intricately designed and manufactured coins and paper money of the modern world. Displays show the way currencies played a part in the civilizations of ancient Greece, Rome, China and North America. The musuem contains seven galleries, and there are changing exhibits that can feature everything and anything connected with money.

Quebec Within the Canadian Federation
The province of Quebec is unique in North America, a vibrant community made up of almost six million people whose mother tongue is French, 700,000 whose mother tongue is English and another half million whose first language is neither French nor English. French-speaking Canadians account for almost a quarter of Canada's total population, with a million residing in provinces other than Quebec. Quebec's French culture and language have flourished in Canada, in large part because of the determination of its people to resist assimilation into the English-speaking majority, but also because the Canadian federation has provided guarantees, from its beginnings, for their language and culture. Canada was discovered by French explorer Jacques Cartier in 1534 and first settled by French colonists in the early 17th century. When Britain acquired the territory of Canada under the Treaty of Paris ending the Seven Years' War in 1763, it chose not to force the colony's 60,000 French-speaking Catholic inhabitants to assimilate with the rest of British North America. The Quebec Act of 1774 authorized the use of French civil law (distinct from British common law) in the colony, allowed Roman Catholics to hold office, guaranteed the French seigneurial system of land ownership, and affirmed religious freedom for Quebec's Catholic majority. The Quebec Act has been cited as the precedent for recognition of Quebec as a distinct society within Canada.

THE PROVINCE OF QUEBEC
An Exceptional Culture for Extraordinary Business
Quebec has emerged as a premiere investment location from which to conduct business in the Western Hemisphere. Rapid economic growth and an increasingly international profile have squarely entrenched it on the radar screens of major investors from around the world. By Howard R. Silverman Q uebec cannot be generalized, typified or characterized by any common means. In many ways, it is a province of dichotomies that is truly unlike any other location in North America or even the world. Quebec's culturally diverse population is highly skilled in both the practical sensibilities of business as well as the recreational art of living. Their entrepreneurial flair and know-how is equally balanced by their leadership role in the global marketplace. Indeed, this combination of disparities resonates throughout every aspect of the province of Quebec, from its distinctly European culture to its burgeoning economy. Covering a surface area of approximately one million square miles, Quebec shares a common border with the American states of New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine as well as the Canadian provinces of Ontario and New Brunswick. Its total population of 7.4 million inhabitants is mainly concentrated in the southernmost regions in the urban centers of Montreal, Laval, Quebec City, Hull and Sherbrooke. From these locations, Quebec-based companies have access to a pool of over 100 million consumers within a 600 mile radius of Montreal. As a result, New York, Boston, Toronto, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington DC have all become key trading partners for Quebec's business community.

D o-it-yourself and organized recreation opportunities abound. Volunteers drive the organized opportunities in the community with support from municipal, Lions Club, and school sources. F I A T he municipal library has recently been expanded, doubling its space and vastly increasing the volume of material available. Public Internet access is offered during library hours. Please call the library (422-3218) or the municipal office (422-3528) for current information on hours of operation. Volunteers operating the library are supporting two important initiatives: a regional reading club to promote reading among youth; and, a collection of works related to local history and heritage. With respect to the collection of local works, we encourage everyone to consider donating any historical material to become part of a permanent archive to allow interested parties to learn more about the history and heritage of the region.

93. The Quebec Factor
What about protecting quebec's distinct culture? These are obviously issuesthat would need to be dealt with between the US and quebec governments.
http://www.unitednorthamerica.org/quebec.htm
The Quebec Factor It seems as though, whenever there is any discussion about Canada, one needs to speak specifically about Quebec, and how a change would affect the people of Quebec, and their unique culture. This is because, unlike English Canada in comparison to the United States, Quebec does in fact have a distinct culture. Quebec has not only different customs and traditions, but also have a different major religion, different laws, and most distinctively, a different language. As has been discussed in other sections on this site, Quebec's government is adamant about preserving Quebec's French identity. After all, the French were the first Europeans to settle in Canada, a colony the British acquired only later. So, much like Native Americans, the French feel they deserve special rights, because their ancestors were on this land first . For the most part, the French got these rights, because the British were very wary of losing more land after the disaster (to them) of the American Revolution. So Quebec to this day retains its French Civil Laws, and is allowed to govern itself with more latitude than most other provinces.

Canada
Culture
Among the foundations of Canada's cultural identity are the traditions of its native peoples. Arguably the country's most distinctive art is that of the Inuit of the north, particularly their stone and bone sculptures and carvings. Native Indian artists also excel at printmaking, basketry and carving. English and French are the country's two official languages, though the province of New Brunswick is the only officially bilingual area in the country. You will, however, notice both languages on maps, tourist brochures and product labels. The French spoken in Canada is not, for the most part, the language of France. In Quebec, where the majority of the population are of French descent, the local tongue is known as Quebecois. Most Quebeckers, however, will understand formal French. The differences between Quebec and English Canada don't just apply to language. The French influence of Quebec can be seen in architecture, music, food and religion. With little in common culturally, it is not difficult to understand how relations between French Quebec and English Canada have often been problematic at best. In terms of formal religion, the population is overwhelmingly Catholic, with a multicultural mix of Protestant, Jewish, Hindu, Islamic, Buddhist and Native Indian spiritual communities also. In reality, attendance at church is an ever-diminishing occurrence across all faiths.
