http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~wricntr/documents/GP.html
Tips on Grammar, Punctuation and Style Commas and semi-colons. If the rules you learned about commas and semi-colons don't mean much to you, forget them and try this: Read one of your sentences aloud and see where you would naturally pause, where you would draw a breath. If it's a short pause, like that just was, you probably need a comma. If it's a longer pause, but not quite a full stop (for which you'd need a period), you probably need a semi-colon; remember that whatever follows a semi-colon must be able to stand on its own, as a full sentence, like this one. If you don't want your reader to pause, there shouldn't be a comma, there, because as, this demonstrates it's very difficult to figure, out, what you're saying when your punctuation, makes the sentence unreadable. Your sentences shouldn't leave your reader hyperventilating from the constant shallow breaths that over-punctuation requires. Nor should they be gasping for breath at the end of a long, unpunctuated sentence. (Consider yourself responsible for your readers' cardiovascular health.) Check your dashes and hyphens.

conventions of standard written English (punctuation, grammar and usage, and sentencestructure) and of rhetorical skills (strategy, organization, and style).
http://www.act.org/aap/testprep/engstrat.html
The English Test is a 75-question, 45-minute test that measures your understanding of the conventions of standard written English (punctuation, grammar and usage, and sentence structure) and of rhetorical skills (strategy, organization, and style). Spelling, vocabulary, and rote recall of rules of grammar are not tested. The test consists of five prose passages, each of which is accompanied by a sequence of multiple-choice test questions. Different passage types are included to provide a variety of rhetorical situations.
  • Some questions refer to underlined portions of the passage and offer several alternatives to the portion underlined. You must decide which choice is most appropriate in the context of the passage.
  • Some questions ask about an underlined portion, a section of the passage, or the passage as a whole. You must decide which choice best answers the question posed.
  • Many questions include "NO CHANGE" to the passage as one of the choices.
The questions are numbered consecutively. Each question number refers to a correspondingly numbered portion underlined in the passage or to a corresponding numeral in a box located at the appropriate point in the passage. Three scores are reported for the ACT English Test: a total test score based on all 75 questions, a subscore in Usage/Mechanics based on 40 questions, and a subscore in Rhetorical Skills based on 35 questions.

Grammar, punctuation, spelling
The Web abounds with sites teaching grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Not surprisingly, most of these sites are provided by educational institutions, teachers, or business-writing consultants, presumably to make up for the lack of grammar teaching in so many school systems for the past several decades. Some are tutorials (masquerading as style guides) for technical communicators. Here are a few sites that I have found useful or that other people have recommended to me. Purdue University Online Writing Lab has handouts and exercises on grammar, spelling, and punctuation, PowerPoint presentations related to grammar, and an entire section of handouts and resources for learners of English as a Second Language. http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/grammar/ Grammar, Punctuation, and Capitalization: A Handbook for Technical Writers and Editors . Comments from people who have read this book Rating: /5 - Rating: 5/5 - Best reference book for those who are aspiring to write I have found "Grammatically Correct : The Writer's Essential Guide to Punctuation, Spelling, Style, Usage and Grammar" as the ultimate reference for writers of all levels. Many who read this book would recognize the similarities with it and "The Elements of Style," but Anne Stilman's book covers more relevant topics and even gives readers quizzes to test what they have learned from the book. Not only it covers a great deal on topics such as grammar, spelling, style, etc., but it also covers punctuation, something that "The Elements of Style" unfortunately does not. Although it covers a lot of topics, it is to the point without all the superfluous information that tends to make reading a tedious task. Stilman writes with wittiness as well as conciseness. She also deals with modern issues in today's writing such as writing "politically correct." To me, this book is the expanded ad updated version of Strunk Jr. and E.B. White's "The Elements of Style."

    Proofreading for Common Surface Errors:
    Spelling, Punctuation, and Grammar
    What is proofreading?
Proofreading refers to the process of reading written work for "surface errors." These are errors involving spelling, punctuation, grammar and word choice.
Why should I care about proofreading, and what should I know about it?
In most college courses, instructors expect that your writing will be free of surface errors, but you may be uncertain of the rules for spelling, punctuation, grammar and word choice. The following rules and examples, taken primarily from The St. Martin's Handbook, 3rd ed. , by Andrea Lunsford and Robert Connors, may help you find and correct some of the most common surface errors in your writing. If you have questions about these rules, consult any good grammar book.
    How can I proofread effectively?
The following four steps should help you become a better proofreader.
  • Familiarize yourself with the errors you commonly make by looking over writing that has already been marked. Make a list of your errors, and check your writing for each of them.
  • Carefully and slowly read your writing out loud. Often your ear will hear what your eye did not see.
