Thursday, June 18, Email: webmaster@statenews.com E.L. camps teach language, culture RACHANEE THERAKULSATHIT By NICOLE M. KAMMER State News Staff Writer Frank Ewers thought it was important that his 11-year-old daughter, Madeline, have the opportunity to learn a second language while she was still in elementary school. But since money woes have forced East Lansing public schools to stop offering foreign language classes in its elementary schools, Ewers and other parents have had to find alternative routes to educate their children in a foreign language. At camp, children learn foreign languages through hands-on art projects, games, foreign television programs and field trips. too Mary Ann Jesse, president of the East Lansing Public School Board, said foreign language classes are something the school board would eventually like to see permanently at the elementary level. http://www.teenboardingschools.com/wilderness.htm
Therapeutic wilderness programs are an excellent alternative to juvenile boot camps. These outdoor therapy programs emphasize behavioral and emotional change. Youth boot camps tend to focus on military discipline and rarely deal with the therapeutic interventions that result in real changes in the behavior of troubled teens and adolescents with emotional and behavioral problems. Wilderness camps teach teenagers cooperation, self-reliance, and responsibility for personal behavior. Teens learn how to work within a group and respond to positive peer pressure from other students in the group who have already experienced the first few levels or phases of the program. Parents report higher levels of self-esteem, a stronger sense of personal responsibility, a renewed sense of accomplishment and the ability to achieve, as well as improved behavior within the family setting upon return home. The emphasis on behavioral change through well-established therapeutic techniques makes the wilderness experience a much more effective program for troubled teens over military style bootcamps. Wilderness programs can be a good short-term program during which therapists and parents can evaluate a child's continuing needs, possibly recommending continuation in a residential boarding school. Wilderness programs range in time from 28-35 days or more. The typical cost for the 28-35 day stay ranges from $8000 to $14,000.

http://www.futurekidsottawa.com/faq.htm
FAQ Q: Why do you use certified teachers as instructors? A: FUTUREKIDS is foremost a technology education company, whose mission it is to teach computer mastery to students. Our teachers are not just computer literate but have the experience and skills necessary to teach kids in a dynamic and fun environment, coupled with our specially developed curricula. It is a very different methodology to teach computers to kids versus adults. As a policy, we do not use high school or university students as staff as they are not trained to teach. Q: How can you teach programming to kids? A: Students if taught properly using an age appropriate programming environment can learn basic programming concepts as well as developing problem solving skills that can be carried forward to other academic areas. In addition to using curriculum developed specifically for kids, the programming languages used in Game Programmer Jr., Robotics and FUNdamental were designed to teach programming to students. There is a recommended progression in courses; from Robotics to FUNdaMENTAL to Game Programmer Pro however. Please feel free to

Security for Community Press Release Israel/Middle East ADL: Palestinian Summer Camps Teach Terror Tactics, Espouse Hatred Some Found to Be Funded by UNICEF New York, N.Y., September 9, 2002 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today expressed "extreme concern" with recent reports detailing the "education in terror" Palestinian children were receiving at summer camps organized by the Palestinian Authority, Hamas and Islamic Jihad, among others. According to the reports, UNICEF funded a number of these camps. "Summer camp, where children traditionally participate in sing-alongs and color wars, has been warped by the Palestinians into a sickening display of hatred and intolerance," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "We are extremely concerned by these reports, particularly since they detail that some of these camps were funded by UNICEF, an organization that has traditionally sought to improve the welfare of children. Therefore, it is imperative that UNICEF scrutinize the camps it sponsors and immediately withdraw funding from those whose only service is to provide an education in terror." At the summer camps, children were encouraged to learn how to play a role in terrorist attacks, learn how to shoot guns and were given instruction in how to blow up Israeli buses and settlements. Suicide bombers were also glorified with a number of camp groups being named for them.
