How about some research data to test some of the theories that you have come across or ideas inspired by your cyberspace perusals? Click here for a collection of data and information resource sites (including some useful tools, such as an historical cost-of-living calculator). Be sure to check out and take advantage of the Federal Government resources. In this information age there perhaps has never been a greater need for information literacy . Be critical about what others are claiming to be "facts." A solid resource to explore is Nicole Auer's "Bibliography on Evaluating Internet Resources" Within the topic-based pages at this site you will find considerable use of the General Social Surveys (GSS) of the National Opinion Research Center ( NORC ). These face-to-face surveys of random samplings of English-speaking Americans 18 years of age and older, conducted nearly annually from 1972 through 2000 (and bi-annually for the near future), are some of the best information available to social scientists. Details about them can be obtained from the University of Michigan's General Social Survey Data and Information Retrieval System , where can be found a cumulative codebook and variable marginals in addition to programs allowing web-based analyses of the GSS and other data sets). Probability and Statistics I - 2002/03
    Introduction
There will be two lectures per week throughout the year, given by Dr Gerrard. In addition to lectures, you will have one small-group tutorial per week. These do not start until the second week of the Autumn term. Your personalised timetable will show you where to go and when, as well as telling you the name of your statistics tutor. Please remember the difference between statistics tutor and personal tutor.
    Tutorials
If you are having difficulties with the course, the tutorial group is the right place to raise them. There's no need to be shy about speaking up: you will usually find that half the group are having the same problems as you, but are too embarrassed to mention the fact. Another purpose of tutorials is to give you practice at solving problems, with your statistics tutor on hand to help you if you get stuck. Question sheets intended for this purpose, labelled 'Tutorial Questions', will be handed out from time to time.
    Coursework
There will be four coursework sheets handed out during the year, each containing questions worth a maximum of 45 marks. The coursework sheet, with a cover sheet to attach to your solutions, is given out in tutorials.

Thursday, April 10, 2003 There are no announcements for today. The final exam will be in class, on Tuesday December 17. It will last from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. If this is a problem send me an email and we will arrange something. The final is closed book. You may bring a calculator. You may bring two pieces of paper and write whatever you want on them. Also note that I updated lecture24.pdf so that it gives an answer to the first problem on the practice final. Good luck. - Sam
