Welcome to 6.041/6.431! This ambitious subject is concerned with the nature, formulation, and analysis of probabilistic situations. No previous experience with probability is assumed. Undergraduates should register for 6.041. Graduate students should register for 6.431. Graduate (G) credit is given for 6.431, which includes full participation in 6.041 and the completion of some additional advanced homework problems. The course closely follows the textbook, Introduction to Probability written by Professor Dimitri P. Bertsekas and Professor John N. Tsitsiklis .     General information about the CIMAT
    The CIMAT is a center for Mathematical Research, located in the city of Guanajuato, the capital of the Mexican State of the same name. It was created in 1980 and forms part of the system of research centers SEP-CONACYT . Its goal is to foment investigation and education in mathematics as well as its applications in the various scientific and technological areas. At the present, CIMAT is considered the most important site of mathematical activity in Mexico outside the metropolitan area of Mexico City. One of its unique characteristics is the balance between pure and applied mathematics. This is obtained by the creation of bonds and technological transference with the productive and social sectors in the country, as well as mathematical education and the promotion of mathematics and its applications. The academic part of CIMAT is organized in three departments: Pure Mathematics, Probability and Statistics and Computer Sciences. The research in pure mathematics is concentrated in the first two departments, while applied research and the bond with the productive sectors concentrates in the last two.
    Research Activity
    In the center there are about forty researchers in residence, as well as about fifteen visiting researchers annualy from Mexico and abroad, with an average stay of three months. The scientific productivity of the center is considered among the highest in the country. The research activity in CIMAT takes place in three main areas:

    Facilities for research students
    The Hicks Building is centrally placed in the University, near to the main library and to the refectories, shops and social facilities of the Students' Union. Just around the corner is the 197 Club, open to all postgraduates and members of staff of the University. The Club's aim is to provide an informal meeting place for the whole non-undergraduate University community. Food is available there at lunchtimes and in the evenings (as well as the main refectories) and the bar is open at various times on weekdays and at the weekend. A wide variety of accommodation is available. There are possibilities of living in University-owned flats, in a Hall of Residence or in a privately rented house. Most students live within walking distance of the campus. The University's Housing Services Office offers help in finding accommodation. Once you have accepted an offer of a place as a research student, it will send you full information and application documentation for accommodation. The University offers a variety of language courses for students whose first language is not English. General courses are available, and also courses on thesis writing and on speaking skills for research purposes.

    Research Program in Political Economy

    Requirements Students join the Program by entering either the Economics Department, the Politics Department, or the Woodrow Wilson School through the normal admissions process and will receive the doctoral degree of their home department. Students applying to one of these units who are interested in the Program should indicate this interest in their applications. Students intending to enroll in the Program should have a knowledge of basic mathematics (multivariate calculus and matrix algebra as well as basic probability and statistics). Ordinarily, students will take a course offered by the Economics Department (S500, Mathematics for Economists) in order to develop the required competence in mathematics. Students are expected to fulfill the normal requirements of their home departments, with the following modifications.
    ECONOMICS students are required to offer Political Economy as one of their two field general examinations (see below). They are also required to take on a graded basis two graduate courses in Politics (other than POL 584, the politics half of the political economy sequence), chosen from a list of appropriate courses drawn up by the Program Committee. These two courses would count toward the fulfillment of the second-year course requirement for economics graduate students.
    POLITICS students are required to designate Political Economy as one of their three fields for the general examination and must take the written general examination in Political Economy. (To prepare for the general examination, students should take the two-semester political economy sequence ECO 520 and POL 584.) In addition, students are required to take on a graded basis two graduate courses in Economics, other than the economics part of the political economy sequence (ECO 520). Normally, these would be the microeconomics courses ECO 501 and 502, but others may be substituted with approval from the Program Committee.

    Go to the most recent scheduled talk. This is a research oriented seminar, coordinated by Professor Murad Taqqu. The main theme, this fall semester will be EXTREME VALUES AND FINANCIAL RISK We will examine the dependence of extreme events in different financial markets and the impact that it can have on asset allocation. Recently, Extreme Value Theory (EVT) has been shown to be a promising tool for risk management. Although to date, most work in the application of EVT to risk management has been done in a univariate framework. We will apply and extend tools from multivariate extreme value theory to describe and quantify the dependence of extreme events in financial markets. Throughout, we will make comparisons with the traditional hypothesis of multivariate normal market returns. Multivariate normality, although convenient, may not be an accurate representation of reality. For institutions and investors primarily concerned with guarding against large losses (safety first investors) such a misrepresentation may have serious consequences. We will also examine optimal asset allocation strategies for safety first investors applying tools from extreme value theory.
