Lemurs
Quick Facts
Lemurs are a special group of primates found only on Madagascar and the Comoro Islands. There are 50 species of lemurs and 17 are on the endangered species list. Lemurs are prosimians , or primative primates. They are social animals with long limbs, flexible toes and fingers, and long noses. Habitat loss is the main threat to lemurs today, as people clear their native forests for farm land.

"Lemurs" by Lezle Williams Physical Description: The lemur is a kind of primate, which means it is related to apes and humans. You would never know it from the way it looks though! There are many kinds of lemurs, but most have long, pointy noses, which contribute to their excellent sense of smell. Each type of lemur looks very different. They vary color from reddish brown to gray, and come in all different sizes, too. The smallest lemur, the pygmy mouse lemur, weighs only one ounce. But the biggest lemurs, the Indri and Diademed Sifaka lemurs, can weigh up o fifteen pounds, which is about as much as a big cat. Communication: Lemurs use their sense of smell to communicate with each other. These primates have scent glands on their bottoms and on their feet that leave odors on surfaces they cross. When other lemurs pass by, they smell those odors and can tell that another lemur has been there. Lemurs have big, bushy tails that they wave in the air as another form of communication. These big tails also help lemurs balance when they leap from tree to tree.

ROBERT SAPOLSKY
Sapolsky is well-known around campus for his fascinating lectures in human behavioral biology. To the public at large, he is best known for three books: The Trouble with Testosterone (1997) and (2001). The earlier books concentrate on his scientific work, but is a more personal look at his life in Africa, introducing us equally to the baboons and the human primates he encounters. As with most of his writing, the book is very funny. New York Times
Sapolsky himself has cascading hair and a full beard, which sometimes gives him a resemblance to Tom Hanks as a third-year castaway. In person, he is pleasant, soft-spoken and self-deprecating, someone you might easily imagine living happily alone in a tent in Africa. Watch him in action, however, or read between the lines about what he actually does in the field, and you get a completely different picture.

Tamarins (general) Tamarins are distinguished by their striking colourations which camouflage them in the wild. Tamarins are small, compared to most other primates, having a body length averaging around 25cm (10 inches) and they weigh around 15-20 ounces. Lion tamarins tend to be a the largest of the group, and are distinguished by their elongated digits and the manes from which they derive their name. The tamarins' ancestral primate nails have evolved to look like claws on all but their large toes. This enables them to climb up and down tree trunks like squirrels. The tamarin is distinguished from the marmoset, by the lower jaw and teeth. Tamarins have rounded jaws, whilst the jaws of marmosets are V-shaped, with enlarged incisors. Primates
The 183 species of primate range from two-ounce mouse lemurs to 350-pound gorillas (pictured left); from solitary orang utans to group-living macaques; from sap-eating marmosets to fruit-eating gibbons. The primate order includes species of tarsiers, lemurs, and lorises, which make up the "pre-monkeys" or prosimians, and species of monkeys and apes, which are called anthropoids. Humans are also anthropoids. Most primates (especially anthropoids) share characteristics such as grasping hands and feet, increased reliance on vision, increased brain size, considerable longevity, complex social behaviors, single or twin births, and extended parental care. Despite their adaptive capabilities, most primate species are threatened or endangered due to habitat destruction. (Photo by Jessie Cohen/NZP) About 600 gorillas (Gorilla gorilla) live in zoos, and the number is slowly increasing. Unwilling to take any more of the world's largest primatesendangered and protectedfrom the wilds of Africa, zoos are working together to breed gorillas. For instance, because gorilla pairs raised together usually do not breed, zoos (including the National Zoo) have exchanged gorillas, forming new social groups in which reproduction is more likely to occur. Several baby gorillas have been born at the National Zoo since 1990.

ARTICLE Animal Monsters and the Fear of the Wild by Elisa Aaltola BIT 1 BIT 2 BIT 3 The animal monster has not gone anywhere. They still live in the media, in the horror films and in the urban stories. BIT 4 Natural nasties
BIT 5 The most famous example of “zoohorror” (perhaps a better term for specifically animal monster horror) is of course Jaws BIT 6 Pets gone bad
BIT 7 BIT 8 Psychopathic primates
Where as wild animals are far away and domesticated animals close to us, primates are understood to be like us. Their cognitive skills and DNA’s have made it difficult to categorise them, and we feel a little embarrassed of how much they are like us. Still, and perhaps even because of this, they also cause fear. Planet of the Apes (Schaffner USA 1968) plays with the idea of roles being turned upside down, Link (Franklin 1985) and Congo (Marshall 1995) on the other hand show us primates as monsters. In these films the main motive seems to be to find a difference between humans and primates. Eventually it is claimed to be (when all else fails) morality. BIT 9 BIT 10

91. Wild Primate Populations In Emerging Infectious Disease Research:  The Missing
wild primates can serve as sentinels by signaling which pathogens pose a risk forhumans in the immediate area (21) as well as in distant countries (5). Here
http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/EID/vol4no2/wolfe.htm
Perspectives
Wild Primate Populations in Emerging Infectious Disease Research: The Missing Link?
Wild primate populations, an unexplored source of information regarding emerging infectious disease, may hold valuable clues to the origins and evolution of some important pathogens. Primates can act as reservoirs for human pathogens. As members of biologically diverse habitats, they serve as sentinels for surveillance of emerging pathogens and provide models for basic research on natural transmission dynamics. Since emerging infectious diseases also pose serious threats to endangered and threatened primate species, studies of these diseases in primate populations can benefit conservation efforts and may provide the missing link between laboratory studies and the well-recognized needs of early disease detection, identification, and surveillance. Infectious diseases respect no species or geographic boundaries. For a parasite, closely related hosts offer new environments in which infection, maintenance, replication, and transmission remain possible. The anthropoid primates (which include humans) and to a lesser degree simian primates share broadly similar physiologic and genetic characteristics and thus susceptibility to many viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, helminths, and ectoparasites ( ) that have the potential to cross primate-species boundaries ( Similarities in pathogen susceptibility have made nonhuman primates ideal laboratory models. During the 20th century, laboratory research on captive primates has elucidated the life cycle and pathogenesis of many infectious agents and facilitated drug and vaccine development. Nevertheless, the ecology of infectious agents found in wild populations of primates has only recently been addressed. Just as captive primates have proved invaluable for research at the level of the organism, wild populations can provide the opportunity to study infectious disease phenomena at the population and ecosystem levels. Research at these levels addresses such pressing questions as the origin(s) of pathogens, determinants of pathogen emergence, and factors influencing maintenance of pathogens in animal reservoirs.

Monkeys are one of the most intelligent animals on earth. You would think a monkey would make a great pet, but this is not the case. Dogs and cats have evolved for thousands of years to be a domestic pet to man. Monkeys are wild. They will never adapt to being in a home. It is very expensive to keep a primate happy and healthy. A monkey that doesn't bite is extremely rare and their teeth are sharp. Monkeys are impulsive, unpredictable and excitable. They can never be toilet trained. Monkeys should not be kept singly. They are social animals and socializing with you is not enough. They will become lonely and become sick or die. So are you sure you want a monkey? While this is an article about monkeys in general, when specifications are mentioned the size of monkey that is being referred to be the size of a Capuchin, Squirrel or Spider Monkey. DO NOT KEEP MONKEYS UNLESS YOU CAN FULLY SATISFY THEIR NEEDS.

You cannot take the wild out of a wild Animal!! What About Primatesas Pets? (Please see Health Risks) National Sanctuary for Retired
http://www.wildanimalorphanage.org/wild.html
  • Wild and exotic animals do not make good pets simply because they revert to their natural instincts sooner or later.
  • A cute tiger cub is cuddly and sweet during the first few months of life. When it matures, it becomes very dangerous due to it's weight (300-500 pounds) and size.
  • Wild animals kept in sterile conditions, i.e., backyard cages, homes, etc. do NOT thrive happily or healthily.
  • An exotic cub, cute and little at 6 weeks old, will eventually grow anywhere from 200-600 lbs. depending on the species. Feeding, housing and handling the animal properly becomes extremely expensive and dangerous.
  • NO wild animal can be vaccinated for rabies! If they bite or scratch, even in play, they must be destroyed. Texas State Law.
  • Exotic animals CAN carry some diseases which are communicable to humans.
  • When an exotic animal matures (2-3 yrs.) their instincts take over and they become extremely dangerous. Many children and adults have been mauled and/or killed by their own so-called house pets.
  • ALL wild animals sold as pets are pulled away from their mothers just a few days or weeks old.

This 2.5-acre exhibit features both indoor and outdoor exhibits melded into one breathtaking facility. As guests enter the World of Primates, they are immersed in the sights and sounds of the rainforest, including cascading waterfalls and lush tropical foliage.
A canopy of trees and vines grow throughout the atrium where guests can visit a group of chimpanzees or black and white colobus monkeys. It is also in the atrium where one of Fort Worth's gorilla groups, made up of two females and a silverback male, can be observed.
As visitors exit the atrium, they are led to a winding boardwalk from which they can view many other fascinating primates.
Among them are orangutans, including a young male who can often be seen clinging to his mother. As guests round the corner they encounter brightly-colored mandrills with blue and red faces. A group of white-cheeked gibbons also reside here and amaze visitors with their agility as they swing throughout their exhibit using only their long arms. It is also outside where guests can visit another gorilla group made up of a silverback male, a younger blackback male, and two females.
