Appleton teacher wins national acclaim for fostering love of science
By Jeff Kurowski
Compass Assistant Editor Among the greatest rewards for teacher Betty Ehret is seeing children develop a love for science. "I don't want them to just like it, but to love it," she said. Ehret, who teaches sixth grade science and literature at St. Joseph Middle School in Appleton, developed a program, entitled "Teaching Our Preschool Science Buddies," to introduce science lessons to children at an early age. Each month she brings her science class to St. Pius X Elementary School in Appleton, where the sixth graders serve as instructors and tutors for the morning preschool classes. Ehret's program recently received national acclaim. She was one of 50 teachers in the United States selected to receive the Lysol/NSTA Science and Your Health Award. Lysol brand and the National Science Teachers Association sponsor the award, which recognizes educators who stimulate interest and participation in the learning of science. Ehret received $1,000 to attend the NSTA National Convention in San Diego, March 27-30. She will also receive $500 to purchase materials to use for her project. Ehret, who is in her 25th year of teaching, developed the program seven years ago. She is in her second year at St. Joseph.

Typically, teachers begin lessons through attempting to identify what the students know. In attempting to match background knowledge with lessons, teachers work from their knowledge of the students which may in part rely on assumptions about the students' background knowledge base. When teachers do not share the cultural background of the students, they can find it difficult to bring the students into the lesson. This difficulty may be increased when the students do not share the middle class knowledge base informing the curriculum. This book provides explores ways teachers can further their knowledge of their students to inform their teaching practices. This book consists of eleven chapters written by teachers and researchers describing teaching practices that incorporate the community context in building inclusive learning communities. Unifying the chapters of this book is the use of sociocultural approaches to inform classroom instruction. This use provides guidance to teachers in incorporating the cultures of the students in ways that enable students from minority cultures to succeed. This approach emphasizes valuing the students' cultures through including them in the development of mathematics and scientific activities. The chapters grew out of teacher research with the goal of applying best educational practices to their context. The focus is on the contextualizing of science and mathematics lessons into different communities from the rural poor to the inner city minority neighborhood. Teachers describe what they do to gather the information they need to make the curriculum content more understandable to their students. The research reports include socio economic descriptions of classes and communities, challenges presented by the particular situations, and descriptions of classroom activities that evolved from better understanding of the community and from the instructional conversations engaged in with the students. The classroom practices include innovative activities that create links between informal mathematics and the formal mathematics of the curriculum or of the science of everyday life in relation to the science to be learned in school.

PENGUINS Re: Looking for Penguin Unit ideas for Kindergarten
Posted by Karen, , on 7/08/98 Kathy,
I can't remember where I saw this idea it, but it was
somewhere off the net and it's really cute! It's for penguin
finger puppets. You take empty film canisters and cut the
lid in half. Glue the lid halves to each side to make wings, cut an oval piece of white paper/material for it's tummy, add wiggle eyes and orange for a beak! I thought it sounded really cute! I haven't got to try it yet but I plan to this January! Karen Re: Looking for Penguin Unit ideas for Kindergarten Posted by Mona on 7/08/98 Just this afternoon I was visiting a third grade teacher's site and she had a penguin unit. I bookmarked it for my use because she had a lot of internet links and I could research it later. You might be able to find something for K in her links.....pictures, books, or other. Hope you can find a little something!!

Teaching Special Kids: On-Line Resources for Teachers
Whether you teach in a special-education program or in a "regular" classroom, you probably encounter special kids facing special challenges. This week, Education World brings you information about on-line resources that can help you better understand and help students with special needs. Editor's note: Be sure to see Education World's LESSON PLANNING story this week. The story, Understanding Kids Who Are Different: Activities for Teaching About Disabilities , provides lessons and activities for teaching students all students about tolerance. Today, almost every classroom includes a number of students who are dealing with a disability either physical, educational, emotional, or a combination of all three. As a teacher, you probably find yourself looking for information and resources that will help you effectively teach those students and help them learn successfully. However, the number of special-education Web sites for teachers can be overwhelming so overwhelming that it's hard to sort through them all.
