PeeWee House Calls: Natural Science on Wheels
PeeWees Winter Sessions
Want to explore the natural wonders of winter with your child? The PeeWees Naturalist program at the Cayuga Nature Center is for 3-5 year old children and their caregivers. Each Tuesday afternoon 1:30-2:45, parent and child share a nature lesson, craft activity, close encounter with a live animal, snack and more. We will explore a different topic each week such as snow and ice, animal tracks, and what trees do in the winter. Classes begin February 25, 2003 and run through April 1. Fee is $50 for CNC members, $75 for non-members. Pre-registration is required.
Bringing Natural Science programs to your Pre-K or Kindergarten class.
PeeWees House Calls History:
In 1987, Cayuga Nature Center, Inc. began a naturalist program for children ages 3-5 called PeeWee Naturalist. This program brings young children to the center with a caregiver to focus on natural science lessons. While this popular program is successful, it is limited in the population that it serves. In order to serve the population of children who are enrolled in full time preschool programs, CNC developed the House Calls program. The PeeWee House Calls Natural Science on Wheels Program began as a grant funded program partially funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services in January of 2000. This grant was awarded to the Cayuga Nature Center to bring natural science lessons to preschools in the Tompkins County area. Once a month, these House Calls were tested and revised with the help of seventeen participating classes. These revised lessons were then published in our curriculum, and it is these House Calls and more that can be brought to your classroom.

PreSchool Parent-Tot Classes (prefix YCPT)
Youth College Parent-Tot Classes are designed for 2 and 3 year-old children, accompanied by a parent or grandparent. These classes are meant to be a first experience with semi-structured learning. Learning experiences are in short segments and include some activities that have social interaction as the primary goal. Parents are urged to allow the child to direct how involved he or she will be in the participation. Since this is a new experience for many children, just watching the class from mom or dad’s lap is perfectly acceptable! For additional information email jnovotny@jjc.edu or call 815-280-1436. Preschool Classes (prefix YCPS)
Youth College Preschool Classes give 3 to 5 year-olds new knowledge and experiences on topics which are fun and educational. Many classes are designed around a theme; others give young students the opportunity to prepare for kindergarten through readiness exercises and socialization activities. Parents do not need to stay for these classes. For additional information email jnovotny@jjc.edu

by Lilla E. Green This lesson was created as a part of the SMART website and is hosted by the Illinois Institute of Technology "What kind of science is science?' you may ask. Good question! I'm glad you asked! It's the kind of 'hands-on' activities that cause one's eyes to pop. This is the kind of science that's as simple as cereal which snaps and crackles. It involves each of your senses, and all of your attention. It's fun-science. Don't you just love spending time doing things that are interesting as well as informational? Well, then, this site is for you! Did you know that science is everywhere? It's in the kitchen, the basement and even the bathroom. Both grandparents and toddlers perform science experiments all day long, without even knowing it. Please come along with me, and enjoy some of the activities done by three and four-year olds at the Hartigan Elementary Arts Specialty School . The Chicago Foundation for Education endorsed a three-year old project entitled "Creepy Crawlies For Munchkins" which has brought smiles and giggles from several Bronzeville preschoolers. The teachers of the preschool classrooms collaborated with the teachers in the science lab, and together with the school's Science Club members, they presented introductory life science lessons to the children.

http://www.usd.edu/~cjohns/bears_lesson.htm
Bears Preschool Lesson Plan Primary Lesson Plan Bears by: Christina Johns December 5, 2002 Phase I During this Phase I will start off by finding out what children know about bears, then find out what they want to know first. Next I could read them a story about Bears, or watch a video about Bears. Some question to start out could be who has seen a bear, where they saw them and what kinds of sounds they make, or totally letting them start the communication by asking what do you think of when I say the word bear? As we find out information we can chart these questions and answers throughout the theme. Phase II Corduroy, Bear Snores On, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You Hear?, Little Polar Bears, Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You See?, Alaska’s Three Bears, Bears, Bears, Everywhere, Lucky Bear, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Bear Under the Stairs, Can’t You Sleep, Little Bear?, Jesse Bear, What Will You Wear?, Let’s Go Home, Little Bear, I’ll Always Love You, Down in the Woods at Sleepytime. Through my documentation I would use their journals and portfolios to reflect on their progress by observing and recognizing their abilities to write complete sentences and spelling of words correctly, but only through their actual stories not their notes/observations. This is where they can use their own spelling and grammar just to get it down on paper-to brainstorm their ideas. So through this process I will be able to see an improvement in their organization, spelling, punctuation, grammar, and how well they were able to gather the correct information whether asking for help or through researching it on their own. Then at the end of lesson having all their products displayed for their parents and peers to see to show where we began and where we ended. Also I would observe and reflect on the children’s abilities to do things within in the classroom environment with the questions asked and documenting the things they should be able to do through the
