Health Mall Sponsored: Lose Lbs Naturally Heart Failure? Trouble Focusing? Science Closes in on Autism Genes By Daniel DeNoon WebMD Medical News Email to a friend Printer-friendly version Dec. 1, 1999 (Atlanta) Someday it may be possible to cure autism perhaps even before a child is born. That day remains far away but first steps toward that goal have already been taken. Extensive genetic studies of families with at least one autistic child are pointing the way to the genes that cause the disorder. The studies already have changed the way doctors understand autism the bizarre preoccupation with inner thoughts and fantasies that separates a person from reality and makes emotional connections with even the closest family members difficult or impossible. Although it was once thought to be a developmental disorder, recent identical twin studies show that autism is more than 90% inherited. But finding the genes that cause the disorder has proven far more complicated than originally thought. Now a report from the U.S. Collaborative Linkage Study of Autism (CLSA) brings science closer than ever before to finding at least some autism genes. The CLSA found that 35% of the autism in the families they studied was linked to a specific chromosome, greatly narrowing the search for an autism gene. And the study also linked autism to a chromosomal region previously linked to autism by Europe's International Molecular Genetic Study of Autism Consortium (IMGSAC). This region also has been linked to a syndrome known as Specific Language Impairment (SLI), which is similar to impairments seen in some autistic children.

Dear President Bush:
The undersigned organizations, committed to responsible sexuality education for young people that includes age-appropriate, medically accurate information about both abstinence and contraception, urge you to reconsider increasing funding for unproven abstinence-only-until-marriage programs.
Research continues to show that a more comprehensive approach to sexuality education, which teaches both abstinence and contraception, is most effective for young people. Those who receive this kind of education are more likely to initiate sexual activity later in life and use protection correctly and consistently when they do become sexually active. Evaluations of comprehensive sexuality education programs found that these programs delay the onset of sexual activity, reduce the frequency of sexual activity, reduce the number of sexual partners, and increase condom and contraceptive use. Importantly, the evidence shows that these programs do not encourage teens to become sexually active. In short, responsible sexuality education programs work!
In contrast, there is little scientific evidence that abstinence-only-until-marriage programs that exclude information about contraception, except failure rates, are effective. Even your own Secretary of Health and Human Services, Tommy Thompson, expressed concerns about the 'paucity of evidence of [the] effectiveness' of these programs.

Genetic Counseling: The Human Side of Science
By James Kling
Kelly Taylor Not long ago, a young couple entered Deborah Lochner Doyle 's office with a dilemma that most people, thankfully, never have to face. Their 6-year-old child had been born with cystic fibrosis (CF), a common genetic disease that results in chronic lung infections and usually kills by the age of 30. The couple had become pregnant again and had come in to have the fetus tested. Though neither parent had CF, both carried one flawed copy of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane receptor that causes the disease. If the child inherited two flawed copiesone chance in fourit would also develop the disease. If the child were unlucky, would they end the pregnancy? "It's a conflict to think about terminating a baby with CF knowing full well you love your 6-year-old son," says Doyle, a genetic counselor and the state coordinator for genetic services at the Washington State Department of Health. Welcome to the world of the genetic counselor, where the esoteric field of genetics meets the human condition. Many scientists enter their fields with an intrinsic curiosity about how the science affects people, and while some thrive at the bench focusing intently on a research problem, others feel drawn to exploring the social implications of their work.
