    Pregnancy Nutrition Surveillance System
    Background and Problem Description
The Pregnancy Nutrition Surveillance System (PNSS) was developed in order to assist health professionals in achieving of the goals of identifying and reducing pregnancy-related health risks that contribute to adverse pregnancy outcomes. Its purpose is to furnish both useful and timely data that will allow states to monitor trends in the prevalence of prenatal risk factors that are major predictors of infant mortality and low birth weight, as well as to monitor infant feeding practices. The infant mortality rate in the United States has declined since the 1950s, but the attributable risk, or contribution, of low birth weight to infant mortality is greater now than it was in the past. Birth weight is the single most important factor affecting neonatal mortality and is a significant determinant of postneonatal mortality. The mortality rate increases rapidly with decreasing birth weight for infants below 2500 grams. Hence, an important factor in reducing infant mortality is to find effective ways to prevent low birth weight. Healthy People 2000 objectives for the nation pertaining to low birth weight states: "Reduce low birth weight to an incidence of no more than 5 percent of all live births, and very low birth weight to no more than 1 percent of live births."

Improving your chances by preparing for pregnancy
It is important that you and your partner get off to the best possible start for the much wanted pregnancy. Preparing for pregnancy will not only increase your chance of achieving a pregnancy but may also decrease the risk of complications to both mother and fetus. Here are a few suggestions and recommendations:
    Weight and nutrition
It is essential to eat a balanced healthy diet. Being overweight or underweight can affect normal ovulation, reduce the chance of getting pregnant, increase pregnancy complications and the risks associated with anesthesia etc. If your body mass index is above 30 you need a supervised weight loss program. If your body mass index is less than 20 then you may also need to go on a sensible eating program to correct it.
Changes in lifestyle - How to prepare yourself and partner for pregnancy
    • Give up smoking, if this is difficult cut down as much as possible. Cigarette smoking is harmful to the woman's ovaries. Women who smoke reduce there chance of successful pregnancy by approximately 40% compared with non-smokers. Furthermore, pregnant smokers are more likely to have low birth rate babies and premature birth etc.

How should my diet change now that I am pregnant?
Even before pregnancy begins, nutrition is a primary factor in the health of mother and baby. If you are eating a well-balanced diet before you become pregnant, you will only need to make a few changes to meet the nutritional needs of pregnancy. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), pregnant women should increase their usual servings of a variety of foods from the four basic food groups to include the following:
    • Four or more servings of fruits and vegetables for vitamins and minerals
    • Four or more servings of whole-grain or enriched bread and cereal for energy
    • Four or more servings of milk and milk products for calcium
    • Three or more servings of meat, poultry, fish, eggs, nuts, dried beans and peas for protein

By Marci O'Daffer, CCE, Doula You've probably experienced one of these, or know someone who has:
    • Pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH)
    • Preeclampsia, Toxemia, HELLP syndrome
    • Placental abruption
    • IntraUterine Growth Retardation (IUGR)

    • Small for Gestational Age (SGA) babies
    • Premature babies
    • Stillbirth
Pregnancy is scary these days, especially when we are constantly told that there is no known cause, and no known cure, for any of these common complications. But is that really the truth? More than 100 years of medical research have shown that there is indeed a way to avoid these problems: proper pregnancy nutrition. Your growing baby gets every nutrient needed for growth from nerves to muscles to bone to brain from your bloodstream, and nowhere else. If you don't eat the right foods, the baby cannot suck nutrients out of your body like a parasite, as myth has it. The baby is fed by placental circulation, which only gets nutrients from the mother's bloodstream, and the only way nutrients get into the mother's bloodstream is through what she eats. What can you do to prevent complications and give birth to a healthy baby? Based on Dr. Brewer's proven Brewer Medical Diet, here are six simple steps that you can start today:

Family and Consumer Sciences Pregnancy is the most nutritionally demanding time of a woman's life. Your body needs enough nutrients every day to support the growth of your baby. All the nourishment this developing baby needs comes from you, either through the foods you eat or the supplements you take. Pregnant women need more calories and essential nutrients than other women. If the nourishment needed for baby's developing tissues and organs is inadequate when your baby needs it, he/she may not develop normally. It is important to eat the right foods every day since tissues and organs develop during certain weeks of your pregnancy. Your own health depends on your diet, too. While your body is supplying the nutrients your baby needs, your body still needs the same nutrients as before you were pregnant. The Food Guide Pyramid for Pregnant Women helps you choose foods for both your needs. Increase your intake of nutrient-dense foods. Nutrient-dense foods contain more nutrients than calories. By following the Food Guide Pyramid for Pregnant Women you can get the nourishment you need.
