This trimester, you begin to gain weight steadily and will gain the most weight of all trimesters. On average, you should gain about 1 pound per week in the second trimester, or about 3.5 pounds per month. Most women gain 10 pounds by week 20. Because of this added weight, you burn more energy just standing or sitting. In addition, your baby needs energy to grow. To fill these needs, you should increase your daily food intake by 300 to 500 calories. Your total calorie intake will be 2,500 to 3,000 calories per day. This may sound like a lot, but it is probably less than you think. For example, it is the equivalent of a tuna sandwich and a glass of milk. Any questions or comments?

70. Multiple Birth Resources LLC - Twin Pregnancy, Triplets Delivery And Singleton C
Prenatal education for mothers pregnant with twins and triplets. Topics include nutrition, preterm labor, delivery and other high risk pregnancy topics.
http://expectingmultiples.com/
Multiple Birth Resources LLC
Multiple birth pregnancies have been rapidly increasing due to advancements in infertility treatments. Twin births over the past decade have risen by 33 percent, while higher order multiples have increased 178 percent. More than half of all multiple births are low birthweight. Over 50% of twins and upwards of 90% of triplets are born premature in the U.S. In contrast, approximately 11% of all singleton births are premature. Twin births are 7 times more likely to result in death during the first month of life, and on average, require longer hospital stays resulting from preterm complications. Proper childbirth education and prenatal care during your high risk pregnancy will assist you in achieving your goal of delivery of healthy, term multiples.
The only program of its kind in Colorado, the resources offered to expectant parents by Multiple Birth Resources LLC ("MBR") focuses on increasing birth weights and decreasing the preterm delivery rates for multiple births. Statistics for those parents attending MBR's classes show a dramatic improvement in gestation and birth weights as shown below. With hospital costs averaging $4,000 per day for twins in a neonatal intensive care nursery, proper prenatal education and preventive care offered through MBR's class instruction and video series can save patients, insurance companies and hospitals considerable costs.
Leslie A. Montgomery, R.N., a registered labor and delivery nurse and mother of two sets of twins, began teaching in 1994. MBR also publishes and provides up-to-date articles and other valuable resources on a variety of topics relating to all aspects of the multiple pregnancy and parenting to expectant parents, hospital educators, OB/GYNs, insurance companies and others.

Vegan Nutrition in Pregnancy and Childhood
by Reed Mangels, Ph.D., R.D. and
Katie Kavanagh-Prochaska, Dietetic Intern
Summary: A well-planned vegan diet can easily be used during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and childhood. Basic Needs in Pregnancy During pregnancy, the body requires extra calories, protein, vitamins, and minerals in order to support the baby's growth and to allow for changes in the mother's body. Important considerations in pregnancy include calories, protein, vitamin B12, iron, calcium, vitamin D, zinc, and folate. Calories
Pregnant women, in general, need an additional 300 calories per day, beginning in the second trimester. The extra calories allow for the mother's body to change and the baby to grow. Your calorie needs may vary according to your pre-pregnancy weight and the amount of weight which you need to gain. Adding nutritious snacks to your daily routine is one way to get extra calories. A sample meal plan for vegan pregnancy, which includes three snack ideas, can be found inside this brochure. Protein
Protein recommendations in pregnancy call for an additional 10 grams (for 25-50 year olds) or 14 grams (for 19-24 year olds) of protein. Some examples of protein-rich foods are plain, enriched soymilk; tofu; tempeh; cooked beans; and nuts and nut butters. Eating a wide variety of nutritious foods will help pregnant women get the additional protein they need.

Nutrition, Vitamins and Pregnancy
by Peter Weiss, M.D.
Most women when they are pregnant will be given a prenatal multi-vitamin, which includes all the daily vitamins that they will need, plus folic acid. Folic acid is very important in pregnancy. Folic acid is required in your increased maternal metabolism, and red blood cell formation. All the folic acid that is needed should be found in your prenatal multi-vitamin. Vitamins are very important to the developing fetus. However, you should be aware that too much can cause grave problems in the baby, so consult your physician before taking ANY vitamins or supplements. Let's run through the basic vitamins and their importance:
  • Vitamin A - Important in the fetus in bone growth and for tooth structure.
Vitamin D - Helps normal bone and tooth development by helping absorption of calcium. Vitamin E - Helps with the maintenance of your blood. Vitamin C - Needed for maintaining healthy tissue and blood vessels. Vitamin B Complex - Varies, but helps in forming red blood cells, also the nervous system.

Correct nutrition during pregnancy - mother and baby
Correct nutrition during pregnancy - maintaining good nutritional health - is vital for both mother and baby. Especially the child can be permanently affected. Most women suffer from nausea and vomiting during the first fifteen or so weeks of their pregnancy. Possible cause is the increase in progesterone and estrogene and arterial pressure decreasing.
Plenty of relaxation and correct intake of minerals, sufficient water and bee pollen can allieviate the situation. Here are some tips from women who have been through pregnancy:
    • Stay away from fatty foods and sweets Rather eat small more frequent meals than few large meals Eat a cream cracker, rye bread or toast before getting up in the morning Map out an exercise programme to suit your condition - walking is good! Throw away the high heels during this wonderful stage of your life

Never prescribe any medicines for yourself, without consulting your doctor. Please consult with your doctor before using anyything - even our Aloe Vera Products and nutritional supplements!
Aloe Vera and solutions for pregnant women:
