Eating well can help prepare your body for pregnancy and help to ensure that all the necessary nutrients to support your baby's growth and development are there right from the start. For example, it is now known that woman who consume adequate amounts of folic acid daily before becoming pregnant and during the early months of pregnancy have a reduced risk of having a baby with a neural tube birth defect (such as spina bifida ).* For more information about the amount of folic acid recommended and the best sources, see - ' What every woman should know about folic acid (and pregnancy) ... Pregnant women are often concerned about gaining too much weight. If you’re eating sensibly, most of the weight you are gaining is the baby - for most women its about 40 percent of the weight they gain. An average weight gain is between 25 and 35 pounds if your weight before your pregnancy was healthy. Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating will provide guidelines and information for nutritious meal planning throughout your pregnancy. The food guide shows pregnant or breastfeeding women the amount of food needed everyday to stay healthy.

Pregnant women must eat well and are encouraged to eat a variety of foods. Weight gain is a normal and healthy part of pregnancy, especially during the second and third trimesters (i.e., the 14th week through the end of pregnancy). Most women gain a normal amount of weight by eating healthfully, staying active, and allowing their appetite to guide their food intake. Physicians usually recommend general guidelines for healthy eating. The pregnant woman's diet should be include the basic nutrients necessary to meet the demands of the developing fetus. Junk food should be avoided, because it provides little more than empty calories. For women who do not normally follow a healthy diet, pregnancy is a good time to start. Healthy eating helps ensure that the baby will have a healthy birth weight and will not be born with infections or other problems, reduces the risk for premature birth, builds up fats and fluids for use during breastfeeding, and reduces the risk of for complications during pregnancy. It is also important that women continue to eat well after the birth, especially if the baby is breastfeeding.

I will state this as clearly as I can: This is a guideline for the EASIEST way to get all the nutrients and calories you need in pregnancy, especially a high level of protein and the calories you need to use the protein as building blocks rather than for fuel. There are other ways to do it if you are vegetarian, vegan, eat low fat, or don't like/tolerate a particular food. Please see the books referenced at the end for more details on substituting foods! Every Day, you should have: (examples given are one serving) (Remember, each category is separate and you cannot fill two with one food - if you eat 3 oz of cheese, it can be a protein or a milk, but not both!) 1 Quart of Milk (4 8-oz Glasses) - in any form: milk, cheese, yogurt, even ice cream (although try to watch the fat!) 2 Eggs (cooked any way, in french toast, added to other foods...)

The Vegan Diet During Pregnancy and Lactation
by Reed Mangels, Ph.D., R.D.
Introduction
Pregnancy is a time of increased nutritional needs, both to support the rapidly growing fetus and to allow for the changes occurring in the pregnant woman's body. Throughout pregnancy, recommended intakes of many vitamins and minerals are higher than those recommended prior to pregnancy. For example, the recommendation for folic acid is more than doubled and the recommendation for calcium is 50% higher during pregnancy. [1] How can you meet these increased needs by following a vegan diet? A series of studies [2,3] at the Farm, a community where vegan diets are part of a socially responsible lifestyle, have shown that vegans can have healthy pregnancies and that infants and children can safely follow a vegan diet. This article will review nutritional needs during pregnancy and will describe how a vegan diet can be adapted to meet the higher nutritional needs associated with pregnancy. Although recommendations for many vitamins and minerals are higher in pregnancy, the increase in energy (calorie) requirements is relatively small. For this reason, some care and thought are needed by

NUTRITION
Good nutrition promotes a feeling of well-being and prevents disease. Nutrition plays a role in five of the 10 leading causes of death in the United States coronary heart disease, atherosclerosis, stroke, diabetes, and approximately one-third of all cancers.
Guidelines for a good nutrition
Various agencies, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the American Heart Association, have created guidelines to help individuals understand nutrition. Guidelines may differ, but principles don't:
The best diet includes a wide variety of foods
There is no single perfect food; each has differing nutritional contributions to make. Also, some nutrients are not found in large amounts in any one food, but instead are found in small to moderate amounts in many different foods. For these reasons, a varied diet increases the likelihood that adequate nutrients will be consumed. Nutritional variety also helps to reduce the amount of toxic substances that are consumed. Foods contain both natural and added substances which may be harmful for example, small amounts of pesticides in some fruits and vegetables, natural goitrogens (substances which interfere with function of the thyroid gland) in carrots, nitrites (which are associated with stomach cancers) in smoked meats, and aflatoxin (produced by fungi and associated with liver cancer) in peanuts and peanut butter.

What you eat during your pregnancy is very important, both for you and your baby . After all what you eat your baby eats as well. It is not true that you need to eat more, in fact women should only increase their calorie intake by about 300 a day during the second and third trimesters. It is more important to eat the right types of food to ensure that you and your baby are in fact getting the right nutrient's.
