Click Here To Protect the Security and Privacy of your Internet Searches, It's Free, It's Easy Pregnancy and Nutrition Of Special concern for Mothers-to-be Although everyone needs the same nutrients, the amounts we need change as our lives change. This message is for all women of childbearing age, mothers-to-be, and growing families everywhere. We will discuss perhaps the three most important phases of nutrient requirements that determine an individuals lifelong health and nutrition status; Pregnancy, lactation, and infancy. We normally think of our nutrition as personal, affecting only our own lives. This isn't always the case though. The woman who is pregnant, or who may be, must understand that her nutrition today will be critical to the health of her child throughout life. The nutrition demands of pregnancy are extraordinary because the growth of a whole new person requires all the minerals and other nutrients, and most in larger amounts. Before Pregnancy Before becoming pregnant, a woman must establish nutrition habits that will optimally nourish both the growing fetus, and herself. She must be well nourished at the outset because in early pregnancy the embryo undergoes rapid and significant developmental changes that depend on her prior balance of minerals, vitamins, and other nutrition concerns. Fathers-to-be are also encouraged to consider their nutrition status. Some evidence suggests that men who consume too few vitamins and minerals, or who drink too much alcohol before conception may damage their sperm's genetic material. This damage can cause birth defects in future children.

Joseph Keon's Whole Health
Pregnancy and the Revised American Diet "The diet of a pregnant mother has always been highly controversial. Conventional wisdom built upon nutritional myths has led mothers and many well-meaning physicians to believe that pregnancy requires lots of meat and dairy products to support the development of the child. Fortunately, this is only a myth. There is no more reason for a pregnant woman to consume animal products than for a woman who is not pregnant. With the exception of vitamin B12, a mother-to-be can derive all the necessary nutrients to support both herself and her baby by eating plenty of whole grains, legumes, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds. Pregnant women have been doing this for thousands of years, giving birth to happy and healthy infants." . . . (156)
Pregnancy and Calories "Pregnancy does bring an increased appetite (usually around the second trimester), as the mother is eating for both herself and her developing child. Usually, this entails an increase of about 300 calories a day. Pregnancy also increases the need for the essential fats (linoleic acid) and iron. The essential fats are abundant in pumpkin seeds, broccoli, spinach, soy, and legumes, and flaxseed oil, as well as many nuts and their butters, which are also highly caloric. Increasing the intake of these foods will suffice. "In addition to all the unhealthy side effects of consuming high-fat animal foods, pregnant mothers on the Standard American Diet tend to gain large amounts of weight because animal products are so high in fat. The excess weight they gain not only makes pregnancy and delivery more difficult, but may also be a risk factor for both diabetes and high blood pressure. After pregnancy, the mother must contend with losing the excess weight she has gained. Vegetarian mothers, however, are much less likely to gain such significant amounts of weight during their pregnancies.

How to produce better, brighter babies
Most people think of education as schooling. Some: even preschooling. But the world's best-selling book in 1999, The Learning Revolution, says real learning starts even earlier than that: not only during pregnancy but before conception. And co-authors Gordon Dryden and Dr. Jeannette Vos devote an entire chapter to the period before birth: A sensible guide to producing better, brighter babies.
As part of the research for the book, Dryden traveled for months around the world with a television crew to videotape some of the world's best learning breakthroughs for six one-hour television documentaries. The result included an interview with Scottish Professor Michael Crawford not long after he had completed a ten-year research program on the impact of nutrition on infant and fetal brain growth.
The most important results of all revolve around brain cells and their growth. Every day about two million of your body's cells wear out. But the body replaces them automatically. Every 15 to 30 days your body completely replaces the outermost layers of your skin. What you see in the mirror today is not the same skin you had a month ago.

Pregnancy and Nutrition:
Spina Bifida and Folic Acid
What is folic acid?
Folic acid is one of many vitamins that humans need to be healthy. It is one of the group of "B" vitamins. Folic acid is very important to reduce the chance of birth defects in babies.
Why should you take folic acid?
A number of studies have shown that pregnant women who have a good supply of folic acid in their diet both before and during the first weeks of their pregnancy have a much smaller chance of having a baby born with Neural Tube Defect, or NTD a serious birth defect sometimes called Spina Bifida
What are Neural Tube Defects (NTDs)?
Neural Tube Defects, or NTDs, are serious birth defects caused by a failure of tissues around the brain and spine of the fetus to develop properly. Persons with spina bifida have varying degrees of paralysis which can affect the legs, the bladder and/or bowel function, and need lifelong medical attention. The most seriously affected babies are stillborn or do not survive long after birth.
How common are NTDs?

http://www.catclinic.co.uk/health/pregnutrition.htm
Aileen Br own, BVMS, MRCVS Veterinary Surgeon, The Caledonian Cat Clinic If a queen was at an optimum weight at mating you shouldn’t need to feed more than normal for the first four or five weeks of pregnancy . At about the third week of pregnancy the queen may start to demonstrate an increase in appetite. By the late stages of pregnancy she will have increased her food intake by 50%. Very heavily pregnant cats may have trouble consuming enough calories to maintain their body condition. If the queen is underweight by parturition (birth) time she may be unable to produce enough milk to support her kittens. You should start to feed small frequent meals when abdominal size increases significantly i.e.. from the sixth to the ninth week. Even with the switch in meal frequency some females may still be unable to obtain sufficient calories so these individuals should be switched to a high quality and highly digestible food with an increased calorie density. A dried kitten food is usually ideal for this situation. Care must be taken to prevent the queen getting overweight because she may have larger foetuses and an increased risk of dystocia (birth difficulties). Birth should only cause the bodyweight to fall by around 40%. The remainder of the weight gained during pregnancy is usually lost during lactation.

Pregnancy and nutrition update January 24 1996 Pregnancy may be one of the those times in your life when you pay closer attention to your nutritionafter all, you're supplying nourishment for two people! In recent months, experts have strengthened their recommendations on two important nutrientsfolic acid and vitamin A. Folic acid supplements recommended before pregnancy According to research reported in the Dec. 6, 1995 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association , perhaps half of all neural tube defects (NTD's) could be prevented if women of child-bearing age consumed enough folic acid. Examples of neural tube defects include spina bifida (incomplete closure of the spine), anencephaly (a partially or completely missing brain) and encephalocele (a hernia of the brain). In the United States, neural tube defects occur in approximately one or two of every 1,000 births. Folic acid contributes to normal cell division in the body. For practical purposes, the terms folic acid and folate are used interchangeably. Poor eating habits, alcohol abuse, cigarette smoking and oral contraceptives have all been linked to low blood levels of folic acid.

Eating properly during breastfeeding will help you feel your best. What Counts as One Serving? Here are some serving size examples for each food group. If you eat a larger portion, count it as more than one serving. Be sure to eat at least the lowest number of servings form the five food groups each day. Bread, Cereal, Rice, and Pasta Group
(6-11 servings)
  • 1 slice of bread 1 oz. of ready-to-eat cereal (check labels: 1 oz. = 1/4 cup to 2 cups, depending on cereal) 1/2 cup of cooked cereal, rice, or pasta

Pregnancy and Nutrition
During pregnancy, try to eat as many fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and legumes (peas or beans) as possible. Stay away from processed foods. Taking a vitamin/mineral/nutrient supplement (pill) high in iron and calcium is recommended.
Tips for Eating Many women think that when they become pregnant it means they can eat anything they want. This is not true. What you eat during pregnancy can really affect the health of your baby and your own pregnancy, actually making it easier. Your daily energy needs will increase by only 300 calories per day (100 calories = one slice of bread and one small piece of fruit), and this only during the second and third trimesters. Vitamin and mineral needs, on the other hand, are high from conception to delivery. So, you must eat more nutrients for the same (or slightly more) calories. The best way to do this is to eat foods that are as close to their natural, wholesome forms as possible You must think before you eat and think before you don't eat, as any deficiencies caused by not eating will affect your baby as well as yourself. As a pregnant woman you will need more protein than at any other time in your life, particularly in the second and third trimesters. However, you will probably have no trouble eating plenty of it, as protein is the least likely nutrient to be lacking in the diet. In fact, most Americans eat twice as much protein as they actually need. As before, starches and carbohydrates should be the mainstay of your diet. In fact, they may even help fend off morning sickness. Fat adds calories without giving you many of the minerals and nutrients that you need. Try to limit it to 25-30% of your daily calorie intake. When trying to plan your meals, it helps to follow these three "rules of thumb":

    Pregnancy and nutrition
Pregnant women are often concerned about gaining too much weight. If you’re eating sensibly, most of the weight you are gaining is the baby - for most women it is about 40 percent of the weight they gain. An average weight gain is between 20 and 35 pounds. For most women, a balanced diet during pregnancy will consist of three meals a day. Meals should contain nutrient-rich foods from each of the following food groups: proteins, fruits, vegetables, grain products, and milk and milk products. bodyOffer(22359) Protein-rich foods have the added advantage of containing iron and B vitamins. Two or three servings of protein foods a day will meet the requirement. Good choices are lean meats, fish, eggs, beans and tofu. Poorer choices, because they contain a high percentage of fat, are hot dogs, sausage, spare ribs, and especially bacon. Three to five daily servings of vegetables and two to four servings of fruits are necessary to supply vitamins, particularly A and C. Recommended fruits include citrus (oranges, grapefruits) as well as apples, bananas, guavas, mangos and dried fruit. Vegetables may be dark green such as broccoli, spinach or kale or a variety of others including carrots, cabbage, squash or baked white or sweet potato. Pure fruit juice should be chosen over fruit drinks which contain added sugar and provide little nutritional value. While fresh fruits and vegetables are best, frozen or canned may be substituted. Among the grain products, whole-grain and whole-wheat are best. Six to 11 daily servings are recommended. Any of the following counts as a serving: 1 slice of whole-grain bread, 3/4 cup ready- to-eat enriched cereal, 1/2 cup oatmeal, 1/2 cup enriched or brown rice, 2 tortillas, or 1/2 cup spaghetti or other noodles.
