Portuguese Literature
The Portuguese language was developed gradually from the lingua rustica I. EARLY VERSE Romanceiro . It consists of lyrico-narrative poems treating of war, chivalry, adventure, religious legends, and the sea, many of which have great beauty and contain traces of the varied civilizations which have existed in the peninsula. When the Court poets had exhausted the artifices of Provencal lyricism, they imitated the poetry of the people, giving it a certain vogue which lasted until the Classical Renaissance. It was then thrust into the background, and though cultivated by a few, it remained unknown to men of letters until the nineteenth century, when Almeida-Garrett began his literary revival and collected folk poems from the mouths of the peasantry. II. EARLY PROSE Prose developed later than verse and first appeared in the fourteenth century in the shape of short chronicles, lives of saints, and genealogical treatises called "Livros de Linhagens". Portugal did not elaborate her own chansones de gestes III. FIFTEENTH CENTURY

More than 2000 songs of the troubadours survive. http://www.terravista.pt/PortoSanto/1086/literature.html
P ortuguese Literature, literature of Portugal, written in Portuguese and other languages. It is noted for the sweetness of its lyrical verse and the biting wit of its satirical prose. Portuguese literature may be divided into four periods: 1200 to 1415, the age of the troubadours; 1415 to 1580, the humanistic flowering, rivaling that of Castile; 1580 to 1820, a time of stagnation; and 1820 to the present, the romantic revival. Until the 14 th century, Portuguese literature was a regional variety of that of the Iberian Peninsula, composed in the language of northwestern Spain by Galicians, Portuguese, and Castilians alike; down to the 17 th century many Portuguese also wrote in Castilian. Thus, the Portuguese claim authorship of Amadis of Gaul, the greatest Spanish novel of chivalry.
Age of the Troubadours
Courtly troubadour poetry in Portugal began in the 13 th century with the reign of Alfonso III and reached its height during the reign of his son Diniz, an excellent troubadour himself. A few authors stand out in the 13 th century; the priests Airas Nunes and Joan Airas de Santiago, João Garcia de Guilhade, and the jogral (professional musician) Martin Codax. (Complete Works of Gil Vicente, Book 1) MDLXXV.
He was the most important Portuguese playwright and yet also the royal goldsmith, the master of the scales at the Mint and the author of the famous Belém Monstrance. In 1502, he performed Auto da Visitação (Monólogo do Vaqueiro) before the queen just as she was about to give birth, and this marked the beginning of a fertile career as a regular and brilliant writer of comedies. His work represents the coming together of the mediaeval inheritance (especially in the different genres and poetic rhythms that he favoured - systematically using the popular metre in both morality plays and farces) and the Renaissance spirit, which was a critical exercise in its denunciation of both institutional irregularities and society’s vices. Amongst his innumerable works are: Auto da Índia , 1509, a farce criticising the way in which, after systematically setting sail with great euphoria for the Far East in search of riches, the Portuguese were necessarily forced to abandon their nation and family situations; the series of morality plays known as the Autos das Barcas (

Fólio of Cancioneiro da Ajuda
Front page of the newspaper JL - Jornal de Letras, Artes e Ideias , Year I, No. 1, from 3 to 16 March, 1981. The history of Portuguese literature can be understood on two separate levels: The progression over time of the cultivation of the Portuguese language for aesthetic and cultural purposes (which the theory of literary history calls literary evolution , e.g. Tynianov and the Russian Formalists); Consideration of the way in which this progression should best be seen, through the critical and methodological perspectives that determine its nature. At level , it should be stressed that: a) The evolution of a community has strong correlations with the evolution of neighbouring communities, or with the evolution of those communities with which it has close relations (in the Portuguese case, this meant certain European literatures, such as Spanish, French, Italian and others, depending on the particular periods and the types of relationship enjoyed; later, it was to mean Brazilian and North American literature, either because of their natural intercommunication or through an indirect relationship); b) uch evolution takes place within a much broader artistic, cultural, socio-political and economic framework
