    The Portuguese Language
    History
    The Romanic Period
The Portuguese language, which evolved from spoken Latin, developed on the west coast of the Iberian Peninsula (now Portugal and the Spanish province of Galicia) included in the province the Romans called Lusitania. When the Romans invaded the peninsula in 218 B.C., the people living in the region adopted Latin, the Roman's language. From then until the ninth century, all spoke Romance, a language representing an intermediate stage between vulgar or common Latin and modern Latin languages, which include Portuguese, Castilian, French and Galician. From 409 AD to 711, the Portuguese vocabulary adopted many new words used by invading Germanic tribes. Among these were roubar (to steal), guerrear (to wage war), and branco (white). The effects of the Germanic migrations on the spoken language was not uniform and broke the linguistic uniformity of the peninsula. Over a period of time, this rupture led to a differentiation of the regional languages. Beginning in 711, when the Moors conquered the Iberian Peninsula, Arabic became the official language, although the vast majority of the population continued to speak Romance. Arabic words that entered the Portuguese language during the Moor occupation included

This is the new address for the Short Portuguese Lessons. They are no longer available on the previous server. Please update your bookmarks and links. "We apologize for the inconvenience." Welcome to these Short Portuguese Lessons! My intention is to give a brief introduction to the language for those who might be curious about it. These lessons can be useful for people who are planning to visit Portugal, Brazil, or any other place where Portuguese is spoken. This is not intended to teach everything there is to know about Portuguese! But why learn Portuguese? There is a number of reasons I could point out:
    • It is spoken by almost 200 million people worldwide, which ranks it among the six most spoken tongues.
    • For those who already know a Romance language, it is relatively easy to learn, especially for those who speak Castillian (Spanish).
    • The Portuguese discoveries have left marks in almost every corner of the world. An atlas will show you countless places with a Portuguese name, not to mention the quantity of Portuguese words that were absorbed by other tongues, including English.
    • Both Portugal and Brazil are popular tourist destinations. Next time you'll go there, you will feel much more at ease knowing a bit of the language.

Introduction Portuguese is the national language of both Portugal and Brazil. With about 10 million speakers in the former and some 160 million in the latter, coupled with speakers in Portuguese colonies in Africa, in the Atlantic, and in Asia, its total number of speakers is over 170 million. in northwesternmost Spain about 3 million people speak a dialect of Portuguese known as Galician. Portuguese is a Romance language, closely related to, and yet distinctly different from, Spanish. It is softer and less emphatic than Spanish, with a greater variety of vowel sounds, and contains a number of nasal sounds that are completely unknown in Spanish.
