It offers the opportunity for students to develop short and long range life goals, to understand themselves, to explore the world of work, to understand their decision making process, and to engage in academic planning. In these processes, faculty advisers serve as experts in their fields, and providers of general and specific program information. The integration of student growth through these experiences and the formal academic curriculum develops mature, self- directed students who are capable of thinking and acting rationally with their own communities and society at large in mind. Studio Gallery! Launch I was inspired to make this piece after studying about a photographer named Eadweard Muybridge. Muybridge was an artist who took pictures of motion. He was the first to do so. This piece is my homage to him. While creating this piece, I thought more than one picture was necessary to show motion. I put it into a 'negative' form, by cutting the black matboard to resemble this. My tribute shows the motion of a bowler as he prepares to launch a bowling ball. By James Polish American Gothic Allison choose Gordon Parks to research; this was an enjoyable study, because he is her favorite photographer! This homage is modeled after his challenging portrait of cleaning woman Ella Washington (American Gothic), shot decades ago at the nation's capital in Washington, D.C. Allison used her good friend Gaby to pose in a composition which holds additional symbolism related to Polish culture. By Allison Wasted Youth Cassie choose to investigate contemporary photographer Martin Parr. She was drawn to his portrail of (sometimes in unflattering and vulgar manner), consumerism and excess in current society. She also very much likes his use of color, and so decided to reflect that by hand coloring just the bottle. By Cassie

Shattered Reflection
Standing here, on the brink of death, I can almost imagine the time in my youth when life was something precious to me. Something more. Beneath all the dirt, all the tears; the fear and blood. The fear and blood were the worst. The fear so thick you could taste it. So much blood you could smell it. It ran in rivers, coating you, tainting your flesh. Tainting your soul. It didn't matter if it was life-blood. As long as it was hot. As long as it was red. As long as it came at a price. The bells rang, their melodious clattering breaking through the frigid winter air, signaling the dawn of the day. Almost as if on cue, many doors swished open and muted footsteps bustled throughout the abbey, as they did every morning. Nicholas's shaggy black hair poked out from under his warn blanket. Ever so slowly he stuck his bare legs out and rested them on the icy, hard floor. Shivering, he dressed quickly in heavy wool and his white robe. His beloved white robe. As he crept into the hall he heard the monks singing, the sound of the nun's rosaries sliding against their palms, and more morning bells in the distance.

In geology school, you learn how to break rocks properly, how to measure angles and directions in the field with the Brunton compass, how to climb safely. You learn how to get permission to enter private property, how to pan for gold, how to identify dozens of minerals by sight and when to take them instead to the laboratory. And in the lab, you learn to use the petrographic microscope. That's how I fell in love with thin sections. Maybe you've seen some striking images of minerals in thin section, looking like some wildly colored abstract painting. What's up with those? They have machines that do this, but my school didn't have one for student use. But if the great geologist

Dead White Guys Part 2
This feature is a continuation of my look at that age old question: "So, what's with this classical music? Isn't it all written by dead, anglo-saxon men?" In my last feature I concentrated on a composer who wasn't a man (Clara Schumann) This feature is about a composer who isn't dead, Henryk Górecki. First, some brief biographical information. Henryk Górecki was born on December 15, 1933 in Poland. He studied with Katowice and Messiaen . He had his first premiere at the Warsaw Autumn Festival in 1958, and in 1976 wrote what is considered by many to be his masterpiece, Symphony # 3 ("Symphony of Sorrowful Songs"), which was scored for soprano and orchestra (in Polish). The composer remained relatively unknown for nearly 20 years, until a recording was released (with Dawn Upshaw singing the soprano part) in 1992 that was a
