This has combined with national initiatives to instigate a formalised field of study and practice of poetry in healthcare. In the past few years this momentum has gathered beyond the individual surgeries and waiting rooms, beyond the poets and nurses and doctors and educators who have steadfastly sought to include poetry as an essential component to treatment and patient care. The Poetry Society's Poetry Places scheme helped to facilitate a number of innovative poetry-in-health projects, including five described below. While conducting interviews for this article, I asked each of the participants their views on the split between poetry as art and poetry as therapy, and their views on how best to train poets for this sort of work. New poetry for a new century The first National Poetry Month in the new century has wrought books with great things: an eclectic mix of words, forms, and perhaps most importantly, subject matters. From collections directed at small children to anthologies for teenagers, publishers have begun to focus on young readers of poetry as a very real segment of the book-buying population. REVIEWS BY CRYSTAL WILLIAMS A veritable feast of poetry, The 20th Century Children's Poetry Treasury sets the stage for children's poetry collections to come. Not an overly thick book (some 87 pages and 211 poems), the content is diverse, well selected, and most importantly, fun. Jack Prelutsky has done a wonderfully subtle job of editing. While there are no thematic divisions, the poems build upon one another amazingly well. Connections inferred by such clusters are inevitable and get to the root of what poetry is about. In this way, Meilo So's illustrations also work nicely. Each page is illustrated appropriately, humorously, and comprehensively; for example, a single illustration might point to five or six corresponding poems.

(originally the DfEE)
The funding organisation behind the poetryclass initiative . "Poetry is one of the many ways we can understand and enjoy language. As it is part of literacy the more teachers can encourage the appreciation and use of poetry the more it will help our drive in schools towards better written and verbal skills. This initiative is not about trying to turn everyone into poets. It shows that having fun with poetry is a great way to help improve pupils' abilities in both reading and writing as well as speaking and listening. Teachers with less confidence in poetry will be able to use it in class to develop creative writing and extend childrens' literacy experience at all Key Stages."
