    The Honorable Derek Walcott , poet, dramatist, essayist, painter, was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in 1992 for "a poetic oeuvre of great luminosity, sustained by a historic vision (and)...a multicultural commitment." Born in Castries, St. Lucia, he was educated at St. Mary's College and the University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica. In the years immediately following in Trinidad, his work as poet, dramatist, director created a vital local theater as well as bringing increasing international attention to his own work in growing readerships, performances of his plays and an ever increasing list of well deserved prizes. Derek Walcott is both from a great Caribbean literary tradition and is definitive of it.
