41. The Fels Planetarium @ The Franklin Institute
Part of Franklin Institute Science Museum located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. One of the oldest planetariums in the USA.
http://sln.fi.edu/tfi/info/fels.html
Brand new technology and design!
In 1933, Samuel S. Fels contributed funds so that the new Franklin Institute could have a planetarium, only the second in the United States. The Planetarium's popularity continues today; it has provided an experience for more than 9 million visitors and school children.
The Planetarium's brand new design will optimize the viewing experience. The renovations include replacement of the original 40,000 pound-plus, perforated stainless steel dome, built in 1933. The new premium seamless dome is lighter and is 60-feet in diameter. Manufactured by Spitz Inc. of Chadds Ford, PA, the dome is the first of its kind in the United States.
New enhancements include a state-of-the-art aluminum dome that envelopes the audience and provides the ultimate screen for cosmic projections, upgraded video projection and super-fidelity systems, theater controls, lighting system, carpeting and theater seating, and ADA accessibility. The planetarium is also outfitted for visitors who are hearing impaired.

43. The Solar System Ambassador Program
A public outreach program designed to work with motivated volunteers across the nation who organize and conduct public events that communicate exciting discoveries and plans for exploration in Solar System research and technology through nontraditional forums, e.g. Rotary Clubs, libraries, museums, planetariums, star parties, and mall displays.
http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/ambassador
"Volunteers Bringing the
Solar System to the Public" The Solar System Ambassadors Program is a public outreach program designed to work with motivated volunteers across the nation. These volunteers communicate the excitement of JPL's space exploration missions and information about recent discoveries to people in their local communities. There are now 295 Ambassadors in 50 states, Puerto Rico and an American military base in Okinawa bringing the excitement of space to the public. Ambassadors are space enthusiasts from various walks of life who are interested in providing greater service and inspiration to the community at large. The Solar System Ambassadors Program builds on and expands the outstanding efforts undertaken by the Galileo mission since 1997. Because of the success of the original Galileo Ambassadors program, JPL missions exploring Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, Asteroids, Comets, Earth, the Sun and the Universe now come together to expand the program's scope to the Solar System and beyond. The Solar System Ambassadors Program is sponsored by the JET PROPULSION LABORATORY in Pasadena, CA, an operating division of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and a lead research and development center for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Hailed as the one of the world's most technologically sophisticated interactive planetariums, the revolutionary Henry Buhl, Jr. Planetarium is a quantum leap forward from our original planetarium built in 1939. Visitors can explore the far reaches of the macro-universe with stars and galaxies and the micro-universe of the living cell, all in our planetarium. Celebrating Over 60 Years of Exploring the Cosmos On October 24, 1939, Buhl Planetarium and Institute of Popular Science officially opened its doors as the fifth major planetarium in North America, joining an elite group of planetariums in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and Philadelphia. The Buhl quickly established itself and Pittsburgh as leaders in the area of informal science education. During 1940, the Planetarium's first full year of operation, nearly 200,000 visitors were introduced to the wonders of the Universe in a revolutionary environment that foreshadowed the experience of the modern science center.

Most planetariums in Japan have been constructed by local districts and are operated by them or by affiliated organizations for both public and educational (school) purposes. According to a survey made in 1990 (all data referred to in this report are from Reference 1 unless otherwise stated), of nonschool planetariums of 5-meters or larger, 59% were founded for the purposes of social (public) education and 21.0% for school educational use; however 96% of the total are visited by school groups for school programs on weekdays.
Most school teachers have no astronomy education, even introductory courses, in universities because few universities in Japan provide astronomy courses. School teachers feel it difficult to direct night observations due to their unfamiliarity with the constellations and because of special circumstances such as poor weather, light pollution, safety, and for other reasons.
This accounts for a great demand for school use of planetariums, where it is the planetarium staff instead of school teachers that usually teach the pupils. As a result, school teachers greatly depend on planetariums for astronomy education.

Bozeman Montana 59717 Good afternoon.
In the 1940's, chemical engineer and philanthropist John Motley Morehead approached the eminent Harvard astronomer Harlow Shapley with a question. Morehead wanted to build either an observatory or a planetarium for the children of his native North Carolina, and he asked Shapley which the astronomer would recommend. Shapley suggested that a planetarium would be better-because he felt the people of North Carolina were among the "most astronomically ignorant" people in the United States.
Morehead responded that if Shapley would amend his statement to say that the people of North Carolina were among the "most ignorant in astronomical matters," he would build a planetarium. Shapley did, and Morehead did, and the rest is history-46 years of history, to be precise, during which more than four million people have been introduced to the wonders of the universe at the Morehead Planetarium-thanks to the hard work of two generations of planetarium staff.
In many ways, the Morehead story is not unique; planetariums for decades have been created to serve the cause of astronomical enlightenment-to offer people knowledge and understanding and a sense of place in a universe far bigger than themselves. It's an important role and one that we continue to play-changing, we hope, as times, technology, education, and our view of the universe change.
