ABOUT FRANKLIN PIERCE At the young age of 24, Franklin Pierce was elected to the New Hampshire legislature. In the 1830's, Pierce served represented New Hampshire in both the U.S. House and Senate. He enlisted to fight in the Mexican War in the late 1840's and rose to the rank of brigadier general. Returning to New Hampshire as a war hero, Pierce was named the Democratic nominee for president. He defeated Whig candidate General Winfield Scott in 1852, winning all but four states in the election to become at that time the youngest man to hold the office of U.S. President. He was not nominated to run for President in 1856.

FRANKLIN PIERCE 14th President of the United States Franklin Pierce was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1832, and later moved to the U.S. Senate in 1837. Not so fond of Washington politics, he resigned from the Senate in 1842 and returned to New Hampshire to practice law. He turned down political offers to serve in the Mexican War, and was eventually made a Brigadier General. In 1852 he attended the Democratic national convention and, much to his surprise, won the nomination and the election. He tried unsuccessfully to promote conciliation between the North and the South and served only one term, losing in 1856 to James Buchanan Extra credit : Pierce and his wife witnessed the death of their only surviving son in a railroad accident, just two months before his inauguration. THE PIERCE MANSE Threatened with demolition by an Urban Renewal project back in 1966, the only Concord house ever owned and occupied by Franklin Pierce was saved by the Pierce Brigade in 1971, moved to its present site in Concord's Historic District. The log cabin of the first Congregational minister once stood here. The Brigade owns the house and maintains it as a memorial to New Hampshire's only President. The Greek Revival house of the 1830's has been restored insofar as possible to the home it must have been when the Pierces lived here with their two children. Many of the furnishings belonged to Pierce or other members of his family. Some items are known as "White House Pieces." When he first moved into this house, he had just resigned his post as U.S. Senator to resume his law practice, and it was at this time that he was exerting every effot to land some sort of government position for his friend Nathaniel Hawthorne. He left the house in 1846 to go off to the Mexican War, while his wife and litle Benny went to stay with relatives. It is probable that they did not return to 18 Montgomery Street after the war because the rooms would have been haunted by the memory of little Frank's death. A unique portrait of this child is one of the treasures of The Manse. Membership in the Pierce Brigade is open to anyone interested in historic preservation and the life of the 14th U.S President.

He was the fourth son of Benjamin Pierce (1757-1839), who had fought in the Revolution, and later became Governor of New Hampshire (1827-1829), and his third wife, Anna Kendrick Pierce. Pierce graduated from Bowdoin College in 1824, and was a friend of schoolmates Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Nathaniel Hawthorne, William Pitt Fessenden, Calvin E. Stowe, and John P. Hale, who later became Pierce's greatest political rival. Before becoming President, Pierce served in the New Hampshire Legislature (1829-1832), where he was Speaker of the House (1832); in Congress as U. S. Representative (1833-1837); U.S. Senator (1837-1842); and Brigadier General of Volunteers, Mexican War (1846-1848), during which he was wounded at the Battle of Contreras. While a student at Bowdoin College, Pierce met Jane Means Appleton (b. March 12, 1806, Hampton, NH), the third daughter of Rev. Jesse Appleton, who was President of Bowdoin College from 1807 to 1819. The couple married in 1834, but throughout their marriage were plagued by personal and political misfortunes. They had three sons, all of whom died young: Robert (b. 1836); Frank (b. 1839); and Benjamin (b. 1842). Although a brilliant lawyer, Pierce damaged his political career when he signed the Missouri Compromise, which extended slavery to the West.

As it was, events swiftly overtook him, and Adamswho, David McCullough writes, was "not a man of the world" and not fond of politicscame to greatness as the second president of the United States, and one of the most distinguished of a generation of revolutionary leaders. He found reason to dislike sectarian wrangling even more in the aftermath of war, when Federalist and anti-Federalist factions vied bitterly for power, introducing scandal into an administration beset by other difficultiesincluding pirates on the high seas, conflict with France and England, and all the public controversy attendant in building a nation.
