The Research Problem
Early in 1991 a number of cases of Cholera were reported in coastal areas of Peru. Within a few weeks, the disease spread throughout Peru and into other countries in South, Central and North America. The goal of this project is to map the spread of Cholera through Peru during the January 1991 epidemic. We know that Cholera is a disease associated with poverty and that, given adequate sanitation and access to medical care, the disease is not a major health threat.
Introduction to Medical Geography
Medical geography uses the concepts and techniques of the discipline of geography to investigate health-related topics. One of the predominant concepts of geography as a science is that it examines relationships between peoples and their environments in holistic terms. In the particular subfield of medical geography the focus is upon those interactions that bear specifically upon human health within a variety of cultural systems and a diverse biosphere. Regarding geographic method, the main tool is spatial analysis. Where disease occurs is a matter of importance. The map to the left illustrates the spread of an influenza epidemic in Glasgow. Comparison of disease rates in different places may provide clues to causation or serve as a starting point for further investigation. Maps showing distributional patterns of health-related phenomena with their accompanying associative analyses bring insight and strategy for better public health.

It has several large rivers, such as the Huaura, Pativilca, Chillón, Cañete. The Rímac is more than 160 KM long and is formed by its union with the Santa Eulalia near Chosica. Along this department's shores are a great number of islands and reefs. The San Lorenzo Island is the biggest one of the Pacific Ocean Islands of Peru.
The city of Lima is overcast almost all year long. The sun appears at the end of spring and in summer. The increase of heat coincides with the swelling of the rivers because of the Andean rains. In winter the intense humidity produces green vegetation called lomas.
There are some beautiful bays in Lima, where the ports of Cerro Azul, Chancay and Huacho are located. Lima also has a great variety of minerals such as: copper, silver, calcium and salt. Mines from Casapalca to San Mateo contain silver and copper. The coal zone of the central basin reaches Oyón, 100 KM from the sea.
The Spaniards named Lima "City of the Kings". Today it is Peru's first financial and industrial center.

It shares borders with Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia and Chile. The Pacific Ocean lies to the west.
There are three natural zones running north to south: Costa (Coast), Sierra (The Highlands) and Selva (Amazonian Jungle). Peru is the third largest country in South America with an area of 1.285.216 km2.
La Costa hosts the biggest part of the population and all major cities. The narrow coastal plain is mainly a desert area, crossed by valleys of more than 40 rivers that run down from the western Andes. This makes the coast an important agricultural region. The cotton, sugar and rice plantations and most of the oil fields lie in this area.
The Andes or Sierra is the highest region in Peru that goes from 2,000 meters to 6,768 meters above sea level. It is divided in two main ranges: the Cordillera Occidental and the Cordillera Oriental with a high plateau in-between. The Andes is a hard place to live in, but offers one of the best sceneries in the world. The main products are potatoes, cereals and vegetables, and activities like cattle industry, mining and weaving.
