Peru:
Geography
Peru renowned as the land of the Incas, has an area of 1,285,216 square kms, and it is on the Pacific Coast of north-central South America. It is the third largest country in South America, behind Brazil and Argentina. Peru is considered a tropical country. It has three major regions, a narrow coastal belt, the wide Andean mountains, and the Amazon rainforest. The coastal strip is mostly desert; however the major cities are found in that area which are connected by the Pan-American highway. The rivers running down the steep slopes of the Andes, generate narrow oases (valleys) where most of the agriculture centres seat. Distinctive and exotic plants and animals inhabit these three different regions. From llamas, alpacas, vicunas and condors to piranhas and toucans; Peru is a naturalist's paradise. The Andes rise rapidly from the coastland. Just 100 km inland the Andes reach 6000 meters (19,688 feet.) The Huascaran is the highest mountain with 6768 meters (22,208 feet.) Most of Peru's Andes lie between 3,000 and 4,000 meters, separated by vertiginous canyons.
Driving in the mountain roads in that area requires much expertise and a lot of guts, since minor roadways are two way traffic, but only wide enough to accommodate one vehicle. These roads have passing zones only at certain intervals, so many times a vehicle has to back up for a good distance, to let the other vehicle pass. The rule is that the vehicle running uphill has the right of way, since it would be very dangerous for the driver to backup the vehicle downhill, and keep control of the vehicle because of the steepy roadway grades.

44. Peru - An Introduction
Tells about the geography, history and culture of South America's third largest country.
http://www.interknowledge.com/peru/
PERU
Introduction
We can assure your majesty that it is so beautiful and has such fine buildings that it would even be remarkable in Spain. -Francisco Pizarro, describing Cuzco in a letter to King Charles V of Spain.
P eru is South America's third largest country, covering 1,285,215 sq. km., and can be divided into three distinct geographic regions. The best known of these is the central high sierra of the Andes, with its massive peaks, steep canyons, and extraordinary pre Columbian archaeological sites. The Andes are still one of the world's most unstable mountain ranges, with frequent earthquakes, landslides, and flash floods. Despite such instability, the Andes are also the site of the most fascinating pre-Columbian cities of South America-like the great city of the clouds, Machu Picchu.
The Andes are by no means the only region to visit in Peru. Also of great interest is Peru's narrow, lowland coastal region, a northern extension of the Atacama Desert. Although the Atacama is generally known as the most arid region on the planet, the climate along Peru's shores is made cooler and less dry by La Garuùa, a dense fog created by the collision of the frigid waters of the Humboldt Current with the heated sands of the Atacama. Lima, Trujillo, and Chiclayo, three of Peru's major population centres, are located along this coastal desert.
Peru's third great region is the dense forest that surrounds the headwaters of the Amazon beneath the eastern slopes of the Andes. This part of the country is so inaccessible that only the most adventurous and intrepid travelers should attempt to penetrate its mysterious emerald depths. In fact, the region's capital of Iquitos, a city of 400,000, is accessible only by air or by boat up the Amazon.

Rioja's central square or plaza de armas The town of Rioja is in the province of the same name in the department of San Martin in the north of Peru, situated between the Amazon rain forest and the Andes mountains. It lies 848 metres above sea level and has a sem-humid sub-tropical climate. Rioja has a variety of hotels for the tourist as well as cheaper accommodation and is a great centre for visiting the natural attractions of the surrounding area which include protected forests, waterfalls, springs, caves, communities of ethnic peoples such as the Aguarunas, folklore, arts and crafts and exotic local dishes and drinks. The newly asphalted road from Lima has now been completed and this now extends to Moyobamba making it a twenty minute drive by car. The work on the road to Tarapoto should be finished soon which will make this an hour and a half by car. Planes fly into Tarapoto daily and smaller planes should soon be flying into Rioja again.
