http://www.travelearn.com/ezineperuvol34.htm
TraveLearn Cybertravel News Peru - Volume 34 Peru Trivia
Ampato, a 20,700-foot volcano in the Peruvian Andes, was a sacred mountain to the Incas where they often offered human sacrifices as gifts to the mountain gods. In 1995, Johan Reinhard , an American anthropologist specializing in the study of mountain worship and high altitude sanctuaries, discovered three "ice maidens" who were sacrificed to the gods on this Peruvian peak. After 500 years in a frozen tomb, this unprecedented discovery promises fresh insights into one of ancient history’s greatest civilizations. There was a time when Andean villagers in Peru would tether the sacred condor – with a wingspread of ten feet – to the back of a bull and let the two of them fight it out. This practice symbolized the two souls of Peru. There is the Indian soul and the Spanish soul – the sacred condor and the bull. While this bloody practice is now illegal; it is a reflection of the continuing tension between the native Indians and the conquering Spaniards since the arrival of Pizarro in 1535. Lima, Pizarro’s proud "City of Kings," is also renown for its overpowering geography. The city clings tenuously to a fragile green oasis, where the River Rimac plunges down to the coast from the Andes, and it is also surrounded by geographic extremes. To the north and south encroaches one of earth’s driest deserts. To the west the Pacific. To the east the abrupt wall of the Andes – a presence even when you can’t see it through the garia, or sea mist, that blankets the city from May through September. Today over 5 million people occupy most of this oasis.

Score of sparkling granite shrines, fountains, lodgings and steep stairways encrust the saddle between pinnacles some 2000-ft (and over 7,500 ft. above sea level) above the Amazon-bound Urubamba River in Peru. The Amazon River, whose headwaters are in the Peruvian Andes, runs from S to NE and it is estimated that the river discharges between 34 and 121 million liters of water per second and deposits a daily average of 3 million tons of sediment near its mouth. The annual outflow from the river accounts for 1/5 of all fresh water that drains into the oceans of the world. Peru Book Selections

The coast
, a 2,300 km stretch of mostly desert territory holds almost half of the population of the country and a large percentage of its economic activity. The river valleys are very fertile and the Peruvian ocean is considered to be one of the richest in the world, teeming with several varieties of fish, due to a submarine cold water current. Important pre Colombian cultures like Chimu in the north, Nazca and Paracas in the south developed in this territory, taking advantage of the productivity of the valleys and the ocean.
The highlands The highest navigable lake on earth and the largest in South America (8,000 square kilometers) lies at almost 4,000 meters of altitude between Puno ( Peru ) and the neighboring country of Bolivia. In spite of this altitude, the lake temperature is moderate, an average of 12 Celsius, producing an abundance of flora and fauna. East of the Peruvian Andes lies the largest region of the country
