Marilyn may be Mistaken about Panama Canal Geography
Marilyn is Wrong Herb Weiner by Marilyn vos Savant is a column in Parade Magazine , published by PARADE, 711 Third Avenue, New York, NY 10017, USA. According to Parade, Marilyn vos Savant is listed in the "Guinness Book of World Records Hall of Fame" for "Highest IQ." In her Parade Magazine column of February 2, 1997, when asked where the Sun appears to rise in the West and set in the East, reports that East end of the Panama Canal is on the Pacific Ocean, and the West end is on the Atlantic Ocean.
Maybe not
wrote to point out that the West end of the canal is actually on the Caribbean Sea.
Maybe so
claims that Marilyn was right with her answer, because the Caribbean Sea is a part of the Atlantic Ocean.
But that's not the Point
suspects that Marilyn may have missed the point of the original question with her digression about the Panama Canal. A better answer might be "near the geographic poles." Consider: You're standing at the North Pole. The Sun begins to rise. Turn toward the Sun and take a step forward. As the Sun continues in its arc, travelling from left to right, you consult your map and see that east is on your left, and west is on your right, and that the Sun is rising in the east and setting in the west, as it usually does. Take two steps backward. The Sun is still travelling left to right, but your map tells you that west is now on your left, east is on your right, and the Sun appears to be rising in the west and setting in the east.

Tourist season, with a few annoying visitors The photo you see above was taken in Colon, where I spent part of a weekend with some Zonians who came back to Panama for a visit. Like many former Canal Zone residents, these folks went to see their old houses, in this case in the old Colon city neighborhood of New Cristobal, now part of a changing Barrio Norte. This issue's Travel section includes photographic glimpses of Colon that in most cases don't jibe with the stereotypes.
It's not that the wretched slums and serious social problems are mythical. All of the bad things you have heard about Colon are likely to be built around grains of truth. However, the Monday morning riot of which I was warned didn't take place, and had it happened like Colon's frequent civil disturbances, it would have at most amounted to a minor inconvenience.
On the 19th I took a cab from Cristobal to Rainbow City to catch the under-17 soccer teams of Panama and Costa Rica battling for a ticket to the next round of world championship play. The cops were on hand, watching carefully for any sign that gang violence might erupt. However, this was a community and family event and the crowd behaved perfectly. We went home disappointed, however. The game was a tie, which eliminated Panama because Costa Rica had a bigger positive goal difference for the tournament. Read all about it in the Sports section. Afterwards space in cabs and taxis was hard to come by, but a large part of the crowd walked back to the city and I went with them, returning to Cristobal on foot. For much of the way I walked with a group of about a dozen teenage boys who were decked out in their hip hop regalia. I was not mugged or annoyed in any way.
