Statement of Purpose:
Preserve and display local history. The Pioneer Trails Regional Museum was founded in 1991 to preserve the unique history of southwest North Dakota. The region's history includes many fascinating aspects, including some of the world's best fossil and dinosaur dig sites; Native American artifacts, including rare petroglyphs preserved in the Cave Hills; and the entire history of the region's homesteaders, from the frist settlers and cowboys through the dust bowl and World War II.
The Pioneer Trails Regional Museum (PTRM) has a comprehensive paleontology department and is an active field museum. The museum is less than 30 miles (48km) from some of the world's best dinosaur and fossil bed. Throughout the summer, the PTRM's paleontologists lead field tours into the badlands where you can help them dig for dinosaurs and other fossils.
  • A complete paleontology department, including life-sized dinosaur skeletons found in the area.

The Archeodome is set up for archeologists as well as for students, educators, and the general public. With three earth lodges and an active laboratory, its findings help visitors begin to understand the importance of the past as the beginnings of South Dakota horticulture are slowly uncovered. A new exhibit, "The Amazing Story of Maize: the Evolution of a Cultural Artifact," follows the prehistoric beginnings of maize (corn). Visitors can walk through the full-scale model of a typical home of the native inhabitants. Artifacts already discovered at the site are displayed at the Boehnen Memorial Museum, at the same location. Guided site tours are provided. Admission charged. For information, contact the

  • American Museum of Natural History: Fossil Halls Unlike most museums, which display their fossils in chronological order, the Fossil Hall exhibits are organized as a giant "family tree" for vertebrates. This approach is based on the work of the Museum's scientists.
  • Computational Paleontology CP is devoted to the use of mathematical models, simulation, computer graphics and computers in general in paleontology.
  • Dakota Dinosaur Museum The mission of the Dakota Dinosaur Museum is to promote tourism by providing a facility to display earth science specimens excavated from the area as a community educational and economic development project.

It houses over 90,000 thousand fossil individuals this being Eastern Africa's largest fossil collection. The fossil sites in Kenya spread along the Great Rift Valley, the lake Victoria region and along the coast. Koobi Fora situated on the eastern side of Lake Turkana has yielded the highest number of fossil hominids the world over. The western side of the same lake is the home of the almost complete skeleton of the Turkana Boy a twelve year old individual from the Pleistocene who lived 1.5 million years before present. Included in this page is a new section on Paleobotany New Discovery - Kenyanthropus The Division is divided into three sections:
  • Palaeoanthropology Vertebrate Palaeontology Preparations
  • PALAEOANTHROPOLOGY DEPARTMENT Palaeoanthropology department is a section of palaeontology division that stores fossil materials of human ancestry. The fossil materials time span runs from 20 million years to about 10, 000 years ago. Depending on their time span they are basically categorised into three major groups; Miocene (5 - 25 million years old) with 2,600 fossils, Plio Pleistocene (0.2 - 5 million years old) with 320 fossils and Holocene (200,000 - 10,000 years ago) represented by 400 fossils. The collection is continuously expanding as more materials are brought in from the field every year.

    Becoming a Paleontologist
In this section of the site, I will tell about what a person would need to do to become a paleontologist. Starting off in high school, there are some courses that would be mandatory to become a paleontologist. They would need to take all the science courses as possible. Biology is a must, and geology too. Experts also suggest mathematics, as it will help a lot. A foreign language would be good also, because some paleontologists travel wherever new discoveries are made. They may want to take courses in art too, because they do a LOT of sketching. When it comes time to choose a college, one should be chosen that has a good program in both biology and geology. Take basically the same courses as in high school, and inquire about a place where you could work as an undergraduate researcher. Also, don't forget to take paleontology courses! Decide which part of paleontology you want to specialize in, that will determine where you go. A masters degree is the minimum, with a PhD if they want to be an expert. After college or University, try to find a job in the paleontology department of a museum. It may be a couple of years in the lab, or they may be sent out right to a dig, if that is what they specialize in.
