Featured Exhibits The Dinosaur Depot features exhibits that explore the very rich fossil heritage of the Cañon City area. Initially the focus was on the Garden Park Fossil Area, 12 miles north of Cañon City on the historic Shelf Road to Cripple Creek, Colorado. The Garden Park Fossil Area has produced world-class, late Jurassic dinosaur fossils for over 125 years. While the area is known worldwide for its dinosaur fossils, other types of fossils have been located that help our understanding of the Jurassic environment. More recently, dinosaur fossils have been found in other areas around Cañon City. The Garden Park Fossil Area has produced some of best dinosaur fossils found anywhere. Among these are three articulated skeletons of Stegosaurus stenops. The first was found in 1886 and is in the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC. The second was found in 1937 and is in the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. The third, the world's most complete, was removed from Garden Park in 1992 and the largest jacket weighing over 13,000 pounds was brought to the Dinosaur Depot Laboratory for preparation. A full-size replica of this stegosaurus is on display in the Museum. Click here to read "The Story of Ms. Spike"

Synopsis

Contents

Synopsis [TOP] The science of paleontology has seen major advances during the past decade. Paleontologists have learned to generate and test hypotheses using numerical methods. Statistical uncertainties in the temporal, spatial and environmental resolution of fossil data can be quantified unsing probabilitistic approaches to the point where most estimates of regional and global fossil diversity have been shown to be found in the face of additional sampling. In the coming decade, paleontological research will require considerable restructuring measures, such as strong interdisciplinary ties and collaborative efforts and a new orientation. The present volume outlines the changes that lie ahead for paleontological research and outlines the research themes which will most likely be most promising in this decade. The book attempts to present more than a vision of paleontology in the new century in that it tries to present a holistic view by including not only pure research, but also considers other parties and realms e.g. paleontology in the government, consultancies, industrial paleontology, museums, and paleontological societies. Issues of public outreach are addressed, as is the issue of publications, mass media, databases and the destiny of university education.

I Want To Be A Paleontologist !
Advice for Students and Parents
Paleontological Research Institution
Ithaca, NY There is no luckier person than the person who can make their passion their career. Most professional paleontologists are just such lucky people. They are people consumed with a passion to understand the history of life on earth. Paleontology is fun, thrilling, and fascinating, but it is also hard work. It is not "easier" than the more traditional "core" science disciplines of physics, chemistry, biology, or geology. In many ways, paleontology is more difficult than any other science because to be a good paleontologist you must know a great deal about all of these fields. Paleontology is among the broadest of sciences.
What is paleontology?
What background do I need in high school?
The best starting point is a college preparatory program with as many science and math courses as possible. Outside reading in paleontology and visiting museums with fossil displays is helpful for building up knowledge of fossils themselves. No matter how interested or knowledgeable a student is in paleontology, however, good overall grades in high school are almost always required for admission to a good college or university, which is a necessary prerequisite for a career in paleontology.

Millions of years after the last dinosaur perished, our imaginations wonder at what were some of the largest and most intriguing animals ever to roam the Earth. What we know about these ancient creatures comes largely from paleontologists, who unearth and study the fossilized remains of the vast array of prehistoric vertebrate animals, including mammals, amphibians, fishes and reptiles. Their discoveries and research guide us back in time and illuminate an amazing and diverse ancient world. The University of Alberta Laboratory for Vertebrate Paleontology is an exceptional resource for exploring dinosaurs and other early vertebrate animals. It holds one of the finest collections of its kind in Canada, containing over 41,000 specimens, and is actively used by researchers, students and collectors. Specimens range from 450 million to 10,000 years old, with significant fossils highlighting unique discoveries that address major evolutionary questions. Highlights from this extraordinary collection are available for public discovery, exhibited in the Paleontology Museum. Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Many of the earliest and most significant specimens held in the Laboratory for Vertebrate Paleontology were collected and prepared by world-renowned fossil hunter George F Sternberg. A member of a famous and respected dinosaur hunting family, George Sternberg influenced the course of paleontology in North America in the early 20th century. George Sternberg’s association with the University of Alberta reaches back to the developing years of the Vertebrate Paleontology Collection and an exciting time in paleontology in Alberta. During the 1920s and 1930s, the Alberta badlands were an expanding area of interest for dinosaur collectors. Using raft-based search parties and horse-drawn sleds, Sternberg routinely ventured into the area and collected numerous specimens for the University. Among the most significant of his discoveries were a soft-shelled turtle and a rare, well-preserved Stegoceras validum (a small, domed-headed dinosaur). Both discoveries influenced contemporary scientific understanding, were studied extensively and remain on display in the Paleontology Museum. George Sternberg’s contributions are the roots of this remarkable collection and reinforce its esteemed position within the field of paleontology. Many of the fossils he collected and prepared remain valuable research and teaching specimens, and replicas are displayed in museums and pictured in books worldwide.
