Tidsskr-Nor-Laegeforen. 1992 Dec 10; 112(30): 3799-801 Full text (Norwegian) During the 19th century leprosy was a serious health problem in Norway, especially in some western, rural districts. In 1856 it was decided that all leprous patients should be examined by the local doctor (District Health Officer), and registered in a national leprosy register. The patients' family relationships received special attention. Some patients tried to avoid registration, fearing that the data might be misused. After Armauer Hansen (1841-1912) discovered in 1873 that leprosy was an infectious disease, isolation of leprous patients was enforced. In 1884 Thomas Collett (1835-1898), the local doctor in a rural district of western Norway, carried out a survey of all leprous patients registered in his district, a total of 164 patients. The data from his survey provide convincing support for the view that hereditary factors play an important role in the development of the disease. Modern research has confirmed that an important gene controls the susceptibility to leprosy.

Norway and World War II Norwegians were surprised and unprepared when Nazi Germany, with its superior military might, attacked Norway on 9 April 1940. The general public, and their political leaders, had believed that Norway would be able to stay out of the second world war, just as the country had maintained its neutrality in World War I. They believed that Norway was strategically on the periphery, protected by British naval power, and thought that Norwegian neutrality was also in the interests of the warring nations on both sides. By Tor Dagre Therefore, the Norwegian government had declared Norway's neutrality when the war broke out in the autumn of 1939. There was a broad political consensus for this stance. The military forces were geared to protect the national borders and hinder violations of the country's neutrality, and unprepared for an invasion. During the first winter of the war, the Norwegian authorities even negotiated trade agreements with both Germany and Great Britain. In February 1940, these talks ended in an agreement allowing Great Britain to charter a portion of the Norwegian merchant marine while Norway was to be permitted to maintain its pre-war level of trade with Germany. In case it proved impossible to stay out of the war, the government of Johan Nygaardsvold (Labour Party) had no intention of fighting on the German side. Neutrality of little value The Norwegian neutrality proved to be of little consequence. Strategic interests led both sides to make plans which involved violations of Norwegian boundaries and operations on Norwegian territory. From mid-December 1939, both the German and Allied sides analysed scenarios involving operations in Scandinavia.

THE HOMEOPATHIC HISTORY OF NORWAY In the beginning There have been people practicing with homeopathic remedies since 1880 in Norway. What kind of therapy they offered is not certain, but nevertheless homeopathy appeared in the vocabulary at the end of 19th century. The first book written in Norwegian was published in 1893 and was written by O.M.Ohm with the title ''Praktisk Homøopatisk legehåndbok for hvermand''. Ohm practiced homeopathy in Bergen from about 1887-1900. Before his career as a homeopath he was a captain and sailed among other places to South-America. After the First World War Olav Farstad founded Bergen Homøopatiske Forening in 1928. This was a patient support group and had several hundred members. In 1929 a newspaper on the west coast of Norway wrote about the natural doctor who has caused the death of a young girl, but a jury found him not guilty. This was a dedicated homeopath whom practised what was called Hahnemannian homeopathy (1). Norges Homøopatforening was founded in 1930 and those who participated on that special occasion were Høivåg, Einar Larsen, Idar Tindvik, all three from Trondheim. Ivar Ivarsson Fosse (Hundorp), Edward Liebeck (Tromsø), Henry Braun (Narvik), Mathias Milde (Drammen) and Olav Farstad (Bergen) also took part in these historic days of 7th and 8th of August.

Although not native to the Western hemisphere, the species and a number of its varieties are commonly planted here, particularly in southeastern Canada and northeastern United States. Originally, a number of plants were established as ornamentals, with Christmas tree plantings being established more recently. It has escaped cultivation in several localities and is considered naturalized in some of these areas. In Europe, Norway spruce grows from 130 to 215 feet in height, but in the United States is seldom more than 130 feet tall. Diameter may reach as much as two feet on older trees. It is readily identified by its dark green needles and drooping branchlets. Trees have dark green crown with a triangular shape. Norway Spring Norway Spring In 1878 a sawmill was erected here as the first industry in the Norway - Vulcan area. John O'Callaghan was owner of this mill which supplied early mining number needs until 1902. This spring was caused by a 1094 foot hole which was drilled in 1903 by the Oliver Mining Company in search of iron ore. The hole cuts several steeply dipping porous strata that trap water at the higher elevations to the north. The difference in elevation causes pressure: this pressure is released by the drilled hole demonstrating the principle of the artesian well. On the slope to the north are the obscure workings of the Few and Munro mines, operated in 1903-1922, now owned by the Ford Motor Company. Norwegian pages History From Local Assembly to National Assembly The Constitution of 1814 Parliamentarism of 1884 FROM LOCAL ASSEMBLY TO NATIONAL ASSEMBLY The Storting , Norway's national assembly, was constituted at Eidsvoll in 1814, but its roots are far older. Even before recorded history began in Scandinavia (around 800 AD), free men met in allting (common assembly) in the various districts scattered around the country, where they discussed legal, and to some extent, political matters of general concern. Later, during the Middle Ages, these tings, or assemblies, evolved into the local assemblies of rural districts and towns, and they acquired important functions in relations between the king and the common people. Moreover, it was at specific regional assemblies that a pretender to the throne was customarily acclaimed and "taken" as king. The Young Norwegian Monarchy Norwegian history is closely connected with that of Denmark, not only politically, but also by family relations.
