62. The Elevator Constructors' Union Of Norway's History
Dec 5th 1930, at a time when the world crisis reached the shores of norway. Anyonewho may have an interest in our history will come to know that solidarity is
http://www.heis.no/engelsk/eng_01b.htm
The very beginning
The first elevator company in Norway was Wisbech, founded in 1891. Initially Wisbech co-operated with the Swedish Graham Brothers company (The two countries were in union at the time). Five years later they had their own shop producing elevators in Oslo, the capital. This booming decade to construction provided a strong foothold for Wisbech as the #1 company in Norway.
Up to the 1890's all elevator installations in Oslo were hydraulic, truly driven by the force of water pressure. 1897 marks a watershed (so to speak), from when elevators became driven by electric motors.
By 1934 there were 843 elevators running in Oslo, rising to 1896 in 1954, approx. 3800 (1974) and some 6400 (Oslo) and 25000 (country total) today.
Today the two corporations Schindler and Kone dominates the industry adding up to some two thirds of the gross marked of the industry estim. 1 bill. NOK = 160 mill US$ (turnover). The annual increase of units would average 1000 during the last decade, a decade that (except for the slump of 1988-93) has been the golden age of the building industry, thanks to the gross revenues of the national oil industry. Presently there are approx. 600 occupational constructors, of whom 98% are organized in the HMF.
During the years, the fact that the constructors have been the true caretakers of the trade - in most aspects - including public safety, has been proven over and over again.

Norway's History Page Norway fought on Napoleon's side during his efforts to take over Europe. Denmark was taken over, and in 1814, the peace treaty at Kiel forced Denmark to give up Norway to Sweden. In 1884, Norway became independent after a long political struggle. In 1940, Hitler attacked Norway. After two months of resistance, Norway finally surrendered to Germany. Many Norwegian troops were sent to Great Britain and other allied countries, where they continued to fight. The Norwegian Merchant Fleet carried many supplies for the Allied countries. When the war ended in 1945, about half of the merchant fleet had been sunk. The first five years after the war were spent reconstructing the country. Towns, buildings, and other sites that had been bombed, burned down, or destroyed were rebuilt. The next thirty years were a time of growth and prosperity for Norway. The gross national product tripled, and the country's services expanded greatly. Norway became one of the founding countries of the United Nations, and later joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Today Norway is a prosperous country in petroleum products, and is a good example of a modern economically stable European Democracy. Back to the Norway homepage

Among the messages was the correct password to the locked database, which the center had posted online. NORWAY – History and politics Hey, what do you know about Norway? Mhh, sorry, but this is not much!! I think Norway is an interesting country with its history and politics. Let`s have a short overview! The first settlers have been the vikings. They settled around 800 – 1050 AC. Real tall human beings with blond hair and big shoulders. They were also very cruel. But if you would see their wooden ships and sleights, you would know, that they were artists too. The woodwork is so beautiful and seem to be so breakable, but it was strong staff and very useful. They were not only robbers and tradesmen, but they were also successful in building up the scandinavian states. The vikingtime in Norway leaded to an political unity in the wide country and to the introduction of the christianity. Suddenly in 1349 the development of the country was stopped by the "black death". Almost half of the population died and with 300.000 inhabitants Norway was now the less populated country in whole Scandinavia. More and more Danes settled to Norway to build up the country again and also to take a lot of power. Norway was now in a union with Danmark which lasted till the 17

However, patients suffering from voice/speech/language/communicational disorders do exist - they are taken care of by therapists from contiguous medical and pedagogical areas. Bredtvet center for logopedics (Oslo) is the central national institute for speech and language disorders. The center is administered by the Department for Church and Educational Affairs and not through the health administration. A phoniatrician is wanted as specialist and consultant, as well as coordinator of the existing therapeutic services. History In 1917 Miss Jacobine Rye, teacher for the deaf in the public school, Oslo, proposed for the Department for Church and Educational Affairs that Norway should establish a National center for the treatment of speech disorders, as had been done in Denmark 25 years earlier. Her idea gained support from her colleagues and in the Department, and the National Assembly voted for a one year financial support for the arrangement of courses for the therapy of stammering, cleft palate speech and other speech disorders. One teacher, school director Hans Eng, was given a grant for a 6 weeks visit to the Danish State Institute for speech disorders.

    History and Government
History: During the Napoleonic Wars (1813-1815), Norway entered into a union with Sweden, which lasted until the declaration of independence in 1905. The Norwegians then elected King Haakon VII, who reigned for over half a century and was succeeded by his son, Olav V. For 30 years, from 1935, the Labour Party formed the government, apart from an interruption during the war during which the country was under the control of a Nazi puppet government headed by Vidkun Quisling, who gave his name to the English language ('quisling' is now a term for traitor). After the war, Norway dispensed with its traditional neutrality to join NATO. In 1965, a centre-right coalition unseated Einar Gerhardsen's Labour administration, but from 1973-81 minority Labour governments were in power.
In 1981, another centre-right group under Prime Minister Kåre Willoch took over. Elections in 1985 kept Willoch's coalition in office, although the largest single party was the Labour Party under Mrs Gro Harlem Brundtland. Instability and severe political difficulties caused by the attempted introduction of an austerity budget brought down Willoch's government. Brundtland took office at the request of the King until elections in 1989, which produced a hung parliament. A centre-right coalition under Jan Syse governed until falling apart in October 1990 over the most divisive contemporary issue in Norwegian politics: the relationship between the country and the European Community (now the European Union). A minority Labour Government then took office under Mrs Brundtland.

    http://www.katolsk.no/www/about_en.htm
The history of the Catholic Church in Norway
The history of the Catholic Church in Norway is as old as the kingdom itself, going back till about 900 A.D., with Christian monarchs from 930. The country was finally converted after the death of the king Saint Olav (+ 1030). The Christianisation was largely the work of Anglo-Saxon missionaries, and the Norwegian Church has been considered the only daughter of the English. Cardinal Nicolas Breakspear established Church province in 1153; the archbishop resided in Nidaros (Trondheim). The prosperous years of the High Middle Ages were followed by decline for Church and nation alike, although Norwegian Catolicism retained much of its vitality. The people were unprepared for the Lutheran Reformation imposed by the Danish king in 1537. In spite of severe punishment for Catholic practices, the faith survived in parts of the country till about 1700. Christiania (Oslo) had an illegal but tolerated Catholic congregation for a couple of years in the 1790s. The first parish after the Reformation was established in the capital in 1843; a few years later Catholic places of worship were opened in Alta (Finnmark), Tromsø and Bergen. Most Norwegian Catholics have a foreign background; this partly explains the once popular prejudice that Catholicism is something alien. Religious sisters working in hospitals and schools did much to overcome anticatholicism; Catholic authors, e.g. Sigrid Undset and Hallvard Rieber-Mohn O.P., also contributed to this. Protestants and Catholics were brought closer together in firm opposition to the Quisling regime during the German occupation (1940-45).

Country Flag ... Travel Warning History Norway's first settlers arrived over 10,000 years ago at the end of the Ice Age. These early hunters and gatherers followed the glaciers as they retreated north, pursuing migratory reindeer herds. The country's greatest impact on history was during the Viking Age, a period thought to have begun with the plundering of England's Lindisfarne monastery by Nordic pirates in 793 AD. Over the next century, the Vikings made raids throughout Europe, establishing settlements along the way. Viking leader Harald Fairhair unified Norway around 900 and King Olaf, adopting the religion of the lands he had conquered, converted the people to Christianity a century later.
