The Consortium is a program of the School of Government at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, but functions as a statewide partnership founded in 1997 out of a commitment to revitalize the civic engagement of our young people. We developed a grassroots-based strategy plan with input from our key partners, including youth, educators, government/community leaders and nonprofits. Our strategic plan has helped us succeed in developing programs to strengthen civic education in both K-12 and community programs. Our Steering Committee and four volunteer work groups direct and develop much of our work. Our most successful projects or initiatives thus far have included:
  • Small Grants Program: We have distributed four rounds of grants to 29 different programs that reflect "best practices" in civic education, including service-based programs. We have reached more than 30,000 young people in all regions of the state.
  • Teacher Workshops: We have hosted four teacher training seminars that have provided resources and strategies for effective classroom-based civic education.

North Carolina Pottery
North Carolina has had a pottery industry since colonial times. Many potters settled in the Catawba Valley starting before the Civil War. Today there are many traditional folk potters working in the Catawba Valley and surrounding areas. There are potters located in Lenoir, Hickory, Morganton, Lincolnton, and Vale, North Carolina. Today the Catawba Valley is known as one of the Folk pottery centers of the nation. More than a dozen potters throw traditional alkaline glazed wares. The majority of the Catawba Valley potters are concentrated along Highway 10, South East of Hickory, between Newton and Vale. Burlon Craig, perhaps the best known of the Southern Folk potters, passed away in July. Steve Abee, Charles Lisk, Kim Ellington, Albert Hodge, Joe Reinhardt, Michelle Flowers, Ben Allman, Walter Fleming, Ray Hicks, Richard Kale, Bolick Pottery, and many others all have potteries in the area. The history of southern face jugs starts with the face jugs made by slaves in the Edgefield region of South Carolina before the Civil War. Catawba Valley Pottery Festival is held every march in Hickory North Carolina. Dozens of potters and pottery dealers.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol
"We expect the data units will shave about .5 hours per accident that officers spend daily on administrative work. This translates into more time available for preventative patrolling. In 1995, state highway patrol officers investigated about 119,000 accidents. Using today's (terminals)MDTs statewide, the state patrol would realize a savings of 28 man years on administrative work - or about one million dollars."
