Schools Public Schools New Hanover County School System The New Hanover County School System, the 10th-largest public school system in the state, serves the city of Wilmington and the county, including the beach communities of Figure Eight Island, Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach and Kure Beach. In 2001–02, the system served approximately 22,000 students from kindergarten through grade 12 in 36 schools. New Hanover earned an exceptional rating on accreditation standards applied by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. North Carolina basic skills test scores for 2002 placed New Hanover County Schools well above the state average for grade 4 writing (54.3) percent scoring compared to 46.8 percent for the state from preliminary results), and on par with the state average for grade 7 writing (65.0 percent scoring compared to 62.9 percent for the state.) Combined SAT scores averaged 1028, compared to 998 for the state and 1020 nationally, which puts New Hanover County schools above the state and nation. In 2001–02, 87.9 percent of the system's graduates planned to continue their education beyond high school. More than $8 million in scholarships and financial aid was awarded to 2002 graduates. The system produced one National Morehead Scholar and one National Merit Finalist in 2002. Sixteen students were selected for enrollment in the North Carolina Governor's School, and two were selected to attend the North Carolina School of Science and Math. North Carolinas Scholars recipients, students recognized by the state for superior academic achievement, numbered 578.

North Carolina School Report Cards The state has released school and district report cards for all public schools in North Carolina. Transylvania County Schools will release report cards on Thursday, February 20. Gov. Mike Easley has declared February, 20, 2003, as North Carolina School Report Card Day. Principals across the state have been asked to send home copies of the North Carolina School Report Card in the week surrounding that date.
