  • Floes and Wintry Ghosts A land renowned for its independence and diversity, Newfoundland is home to a fascinating array of climates and weather. Its geography explains many of the unique features of the province's climate. The island covers 5 1/2 degrees of latitude, about the same as the Great Lakes. Its southern extremity lies close to the forty-seventh parallel, approximately the same latitude as Seattle and Paris. It covers an area of 108 860 km2, with elevations ranging from sea level to above 800 m. There are few physical barriers to protect Newfoundland from weather systems sweeping across it. Its situation on the eastern side of North America favours strong seasonal contrasts in the visiting air masses.

A bug in hand - not under foot: Lloyd Hollett, owner of the Newfoundland Insectarium and Butterfly Pavilion, provided students with an opportunity to better understand the world of insects while visiting several Burin Peninsula schools last week. This Sacred Heart Elementary student’s initial shock from holding a giant hissing cockroach gave way to a certain appreciation for the less-than-popular insect. More on Page Three.

In a world of constant change it would be nice to believe that some things are truly constant and will never change. Once you've discovered that some of the best things about this world are free and available you would like to hang on to them as long as you live. So it is with my seasonal trips to the barrens to witness the life cycle of Canada Geese. Atlantic Canada Geese are native to Nfld. and have always returned every spring at the first sign of breakup to repopulate their family breeding ponds. It is a welcome sign of spring when the loud raucous calls of breeding Geese echo throughout the still air on a damp drizzly day in the barren country. Breeding geese are territorially aggressive and routinely return to the same areas to breed year after year. The family unit having migrated south in the late fall return together with the yearling birds breaking off into a separate flock, often feeding nearby while the parents begin another season.
Following the sounds of geese honking in the spring will lead you to witness the fierce wild nature of these birds as they forcibly drive other mating pairs out of their territories by hurling their bodies with beaks outstretched in harpoon like fashion. I'm sure that this display is more of an attempt to intimidate than an actual attack since the challengers are likely to be close cousins having been born in the same place. As the daylight fades a human intruder can be mistaken for a long necked challenger and be chased after in defence of territory. I have had to go well out of my way to avoid them when the light was too low for photography only to end up sitting in a clump of brush with a saucy pair of loud honkers attempting to ferret out the reluctant challenger.

Nestled into the northeast corner of North America, facing the North Atlantic, is Newfoundland,Canada's most easterly province. Lying between the 46th and 61st parallels, the province consists of two distinct geographical entities: Newfoundland and Labrador. The island of Newfoundland, which forms the southern and eastern portion of the province, is a large triangular-shaped area of some 112 000 km2, while the province's total area is 405 720km2. Located at the mouth of the St. Lawrence River, the island is about halfway between thecentre of North America and the coast of western Europe. The island of Newfoundland is separated from the Canadian mainland by the Strait of Belle Isle in the north and by the wider Cabot Strait in the south. The mainland, Labrador, is bordered by northeastern Quebec. Approximately two and a half times as large as the island, it remains a vast, pristine wilderness, where the northern lights, or aurora borealis, flicker over the largest caribou herd in the world.
