    NEW ZEALAND MAP SOCIETY
Welcome to the pages of the New Zealand Map Society
Objectives The New Zealand Map Society was formed in 1977 with the following objectives in mind:
      a. to further the development and promotion of high standards in
map collections in New Zealand b. to encourage communication between map users, map librarians
and map producers c. to liaise with similar organisations overseas.
History The New Zealand Map Society had its beginnings in 1977 as the New Zealand Map Keepers Circle. As the original name suggests, the Society was initially formed to bring together people who worked with maps. In 1987 the Society changed its name as part of a move to broaden its membership to include not only those who work with maps, but map collectors, map users and people with an interest in New Zealand geography and history. Meetings The New Zealand Map Society holds an annual seminar, usually in February. The location of the seminar varies each year, giving members an opportunity to experience New Zealand regional geography and history first hand. Most importantly it provides the chance to meet people with a common interest and to keep up with current devlopments on the cartographic scene. The 2002 seminar is scheduled to be held in Hamilton.

    31. Tuatara Facts
List of facts about the new zealand native reptile.
    http://www.nz.com/NZ/Geography/TuataraFacts.html
    TUATARA FACTS
    • The tuatara is native to New Zealand
    • It is the sole survivor of the beak-heads which is a group of very ancient reptiles
    • The tuatara is the most ancient of all living reptiles. It is even older than the dinosaurs
    • It has survived for almost 200 million years
    • Tuatara can live up to 100 years
    • The male is much bigger than the female
    • Young tuatara have a third eye. It is on top of the brain between it's other eyes. It becomes covered over when the tuatara is an adult
    Babies
The female lays 8 - 15 eggs in a shallow hole in the ground. The eggs are not cared for in any way by the parents. It takes 12 - 15 months for the young to hatch. The female may only lay eggs every 3 - 4 years
    Food
Tuataras are carnivores. They eat weta , moths and beetles. Sometimes they eat small lizards and even the eggs and chicks of petrels. At the zoo we feed them baby mice, huhu grubs , worms, meal worms and insects. They are fed twice a month.
    Where are they?
Tuataras were once found all over New Zealand but now they only survive on offshore islands because of the rodents, wild cats and pigs that were introduced to the mainland. Rarere_K@wcc.govt.nz via Richard Naylor on soc.culture.new-zealand.
