No Child Unrecruited Should the military be given the names of every high school student in America? By David Goodman November/December 2002 Issue High School cadets in Mariette, Georgia Sharon Shea-Keneally, principal of Mount Anthony Union High School in Bennington, Vermont, was shocked when she received a letter in May from military recruiters demanding a list of all her students, including names, addresses, and phone numbers. The school invites recruiters to participate in career days and job fairs, but like most school districts, it keeps student information strictly confidential. "We don't give out a list of names of our kids to anybody," says Shea-Keneally, "not to colleges, churches, employers nobody." E-mail article Print article Recruiting the Class of 2005 No Child Left Behind Act ... E-mail the editor But when Shea-Keneally insisted on an explanation, she was in for an even bigger surprise: The recruiters cited the No Child Left Behind Act, President Bush's sweeping new education law passed earlier this year. There, buried deep within the law's 670 pages, is a provision requiring public secondary schools to provide military recruiters not only with access to facilities, but also with contact information for every student or face a cutoff of all federal aid.

Field Office Highlights - New York The New York Field Office Community Outreach Program (NYO COP) was involved in several community programs during 1999 including appearances at Community and Senior Citizen Centers throughout New York's five boroughs, Long Island, and Westchester. Career seminars, health and safety events, street and community fairs, and individual precinct Community Councils were also visited. In addition, the NYO COP was represented at each of New York's five boroughs during National Night Out on August 3, 1999. This year's event will be held on August 1, 2000, and the New York Office will be fully represented.
Youth Programs
Once again this past year, tours of the New York Office were conducted for various youth groups including Boy Scouts, Explorers, and high school classes. The demonstration of how the New York Office Operations Center works during emergencies (such as the TWA Flight 800 crash and the terrorist bombing of the World Trade Center) proved to be the highlight of the tours.
FBI programs were presented to youngsters through liaison with organizations such as Big Brothers and Big Sisters and Walks of Life. Walks of Life, which is run by the Greater New York Hospital Foundation, places an emphasis on introducing youngsters to the workplace early in their lives. This program has been proven to have a great impact on children who, at this point in their lives, are wavering between a productive lifestyle and that which is dangerous and unproductive.

The Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States (AMCSUS) is a nonprofit service organization which serves as the binding force and communication hub for its member schools. The purpose, as put forth in its Constitution, is to promote the common interest of all members and to advance their welfare; promote and maintain high scholastic, military and ethical standards in member schools; represent the mutual interests of the member schools before the Department of Defense as well as the general public; foster and extend patriotism and respect for duly constituted authority; and cultivate citizens who love peace and who strive to maintain it. Regular membership is extended to essentially military schools which have a member of the armed services detailed or approved by the Department of Defense, and which maintain good standing in their regional accrediting organization. (An "essentially military" school is defined as an institution with military programs approved by one of the military services and which organizes its student body as a cadet corps, with students habitually in uniform and continually under military discipline while under the jurisdiction of the college or school.) Associate membership may be granted to schools offering a military program but which do not otherwise qualify for regular membership.

WITH the Iraqi people dancing atop a dictator's fallen statue, the pundits who forecast an American bloodbath have begun to change their story. Implying that our military achievement wasn't all that grand, they tell us Saddam didn't even have much of a plan to defend his country. ANTIWAR: MOVEMENT, OR CULT?
By MARK GOLDBLATT
THREE weeks into the Iraqi War, the cancerous Ba'athist regime has been destroyed, and the hunt for Saddam has become a bunker-buster version of the carnival game in which the chipmunk's head pops up through a hole in the board, and you clobber him with a mallet. LONG-DISTANCE ARABS

EVEN as Marines and Iraqis worked together joyously to tear down that obscene statue of Saddam Hussein, pundits and policymakers wouldn't even pause to revel in the wonderment of a people freed from totalitarian tyranny.
