    Los Alamos Schools Garner Praise
The growing interest in the Los Alamos Public School system is well deserved. In a recent ranking of 651 New Mexico schools, six of seven, including Los Alamos High School (LAHS) and Los Alamos Middle School (LAMS), were ranked exemplary by the New Mexico State Department of Education. Teacher salaries are among the highest in the state as is the per student operational expenditure. High test scores, superior ratings, and a small town environment combine to make Los Alamos increasingly attractive to those wishing to relocate. Notable Achievements
Diversity in education is very much in evidence at LAHS. Some of the more noteworthy recent accomplishments follow. A Los Alamos High School student was among 141 students named as Presidential Scholars for 2000. LAHS basketball team won the state championship in 2000.

    SOCORRO, NEW MEXICO
Socorro, a community of 9,000 in the sunny Rio Grande Valley of central New Mexico, combines the pleasant climate of the high desert, peace and quiet of a small town, and sophistication brought by a state university.
    History
Distinguished as one of the oldest settlements in the Southwest, the city's name means "refuge" or "aid," and dates back to 1598 when people of the Pilabo Pueblo fed and sheltered weary members of the Juan de Onate expeditions. The arrival of the Santa Fe Railroad in 1880 made possible extensive mining for ore, and Socorro quickly became New Mexico's largest town. A decade later mining opportunities had declined and Socorro returned to its agricultural heritage. However, the brief boom left as a legacy the New Mexico School of Mines (now called New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, or New Mexico Tech), which has helped to define this city as one of New Mexico's leading centers for education and research, home to one of the state's highest percentages of Ph.D.s per capita.
    Demographics and Weather
Inclusion of county residence brings the area population up to about 23,000, with a median age of 30 years, 47% claiming Hispanic origins. Sitting at an elevation of 4,585 ft. above sea level, Socorro is particularly proud of its dry, sunny weather with an average July temperature of 61-93 degrees F, an average January temperature of 25 to 55 degrees F, and an average annual rainfall of 6-9 inches. Snowfall, which begins in late October, averages around 6 inches.

    Statutory Authority Patricia A. Madrid:
    Biographical Information
Patricia A. Madrid was elected New Mexico's 29 th Attorney General in November 1998. As the top law enforcement officer in the state and the people's lawyer, she has placed priority on violent crime prosecution, consumer and environmental protection. One of her first actions as Attorney General was the establishment of a Capital Litigation Unit to provide assistance to district attorneys statewide in the prosecution of violent crimes, particularly death penalty cases.  This unit brought together some of the best and most experienced violent crimes prosecutors in the state.  This unit has succeeded in convicting murderers, rapists, and a sex torturer.  In addition, the unit is prosecuting fifteen individuals charged in connection with the murder of a guard during a 1999 prison riot. Attorney General Madrid introduced New Mexico's first state-level Crime Victim's Services Unit.  This unit provides support to victims and their families through the appellate process, which can be a lengthy one.  This unit has also been instrumental in obtaining grants to provide services statewide.  A grant was obtained to provide training and equipment to law enforcement agencies in their fight against domestic violence.  In southern New Mexico a grant was obtained to fund a victims advocate for immigrant victims of domestic violence.   Mothers Against Drunk Driving recognized Attorney General Madrid's efforts on behalf of crime victims with their first Annual Award for Elected Officials.
