NEW JERSEY FOOD COMPANY EXECUTIVE ORDERED TO SERVE JAIL TIME
AND TO PAY RESTITUTION FOR RIGGING BIDS TO THE NYCBOE
16th Conspirator Sentenced To Serve Jail Time
To date 31 individuals and 15 corporations have been convicted of rigging bids, or other related charges, on contracts for frozen food, produce, dairy and other food products supplied to the NYCBOE and other customers. Salomon is the 16th conspirator sentenced to serve jail time for his role in the scheme. Nine of the defendants have been sentenced to serve terms longer than one year. In addition, five defendants all of whom cooperated with the government's investigation were sentenced to terms of home confinement. "The sentences imposed on Salomon and the other conspirators in these matters send a powerful message to other executives about the risks of engaging in bid rigging," said Charles A. James, Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Department's Antitrust Division. "The success of our efforts to expose and punish more than 20 members of these longstanding conspiracies demonstrates our commitment to vigorous antitrust enforcement." In addition to the prison terms, the conspirators have collectively been ordered to pay more than $20 million in restitution to the NYCBOE, and an additional $2 million to other victims of similar schemes, including the New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS), the Newark (NJ) Public Schools, Nassau County (NY), and Odyssey House, Inc., a not-for-profit social service organization located in Manhattan. Many of the defendants were also prosecuted for tax offenses.

ABBOTT SUPERINTENDENTS OPPOSE DOE'S PROPOSED CHANGES TO ABBOTT In a March 27, 2003, letter to Commissioner Librera the Abbott Superintendents stated their opposition to the Department of Education's proposed changes to the Abbott V program and funding mandates. The letter urges the DOE to withdraw the proposal and recommitt to working with the districts and ELC to improve implementation of programs and reforms. (View letter as PDF file.) PROPOSED 03-04 BUDGET MEANS DRASTIC CUTBACKS IN ABBOTT PROGRAMS ELC's analysis of the proposed 03-04 budget shows that there is no overall increase in state aid to the Abbott districts. Instead, there will be substantial loss in existing funding, resulting in dramatic cutbacks in programs, staff and services in almost every Abbott district. Click here for Summary and District by District Analysis. The McGreevy Administration is proposing drastic cutbacks in the Abbott programs, reforms and funding effective 2003-04. These proposals will severely eliminate, undermine and weaken implementation of the Abbott rulings. ELC has announced it will not support these proposals. ELC urges parents, teachers, SMIT members and other "Abbott Advocates" to make sure your district joins in opposition to the Administration's proposed cutbacks. The following materials from ELC analyze the proposals and explain ELC's reasons for opposing them:

“THERE’S A PHENOMENALLY DIVERSE COMMUNITY IN NORTHERN NEW JERSEY. EVERYTHING I CAN POSSIBLY WANT IS RIGHT AT MY FINGERTIPS. WHEN I FIRST MOVED HERE MY NUMBER ONE PRIORITY WAS TO GET AS CLOSE TO NEW YORK CITY AS POSSIBLE, BUT SINCE THEN I’VE REALLY JUST FALLEN IN LOVE WITH NEW JERSEY.”
-Mark Williams, 2000 corps member
"WHEN YOU COME INSIDE MY SCHOOL, YOU SEE PEOPLE WHO CARE. WE HAVE A SMALL CLOSE-KNIT STAFF, AND WE WORK TOGETHER ALL THE TIME. THE STUDENTS FACE A LOT OF SOCIO-ECONOMIC CHALLENGES, BUT OUR SCHOOL IS NOT LETTING THAT BE AN EXCUSE FOR LACK OF STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT." - Susan Asiyanbi, 2001 corps member LIFE
One of the country ’s best-kept secrets, New Jersey offers an eclectic blend of social and cultural opportunities that underscore its urban and rural character. With easy access to New York City (15-20 minutes by train), but without many of the challenges associated with living there, northern New Jersey offers a highly livable option for many people attracted to the offerings of a big city and the advantages of living in or near less densely populated areas. Food lovers of northern New Jersey enjoy numerous ethnic restaurants; sports enthusiasts here can watch the NFL ’s New York Giants and Jets, the NBA ’s Nets, and the NHL ’s Devils at the nearby Meadowlands Sports Complex; and music aficionados find that concert options are as varied as they are numerous.
