By Gregory Cizek, published in Phi Delta Kappan. "The model that appears to guide current policy development constructing crises and crafting solutions has a long and not particularly productive history. The starting point for a reconceptualization is also a stopping point: eschewing a crisis orientation." Bringing Evidence-Driven Progress to Education: A Recommended Strategy for the US DOE
Report of the Coalition for Evidence-Based Policy 11-02
27pp: This coalition is comprised of several notables in the area of education history and research. The report is a recommendation to the US DOE, highlighting the importance of randomized controlled trials in education research, but also highlights some other findings that illustrate how difficult disseminating and implementing things “that work” is in practice. For instance, the report notes research conducted in the ‘90s on whole school reform models: in ’98, 29% of schools receiving funds for WSR adopted models that the American Institutes for Research (AIR) rated as having “strong” or “promising” evidence of effectiveness. In 01-02, just 18% of schools receiving funds adopted a strong or promising model although the legislation requires the models be based on “rigorous research and effective practices” similar to NCLB requirements.

PRESS RELEASE Minority Students From The Nation's Top Medical Schools Discuss Health Disparities And Medical Careers With High School Students
LAWRENCEVILLE, NEW JERSEY (March 5, 2003) Dozens of minority medical students from the nation's top medical schools and their faculty mentors, along with 98 area high school students, today are meeting to address health disparities in America and the need to increase minority representation among physicians on medical school faculties and in biomedical research.
The meeting is part of a two-day Research Symposium. Twenty-nine gifted medical students participating in the prestigious Fellowship Program in Academic Medicine for Minority Students will present results of their research.
"We believe that one of the best ways to reduce and ultimately to eliminate health disparities between minorities and the general population is to identify, nurture and mentor a growing cadre of outstanding biomedical researchers. So we salute and support with grants totaling almost $5 million this Fellowship Program," said John L. Damonti, president, Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation, which has funded the program since 1990.
As part of today's program, minority high school students from nine New Jersey school districts, New York City (New York Academy of Medicine's Junior Fellows Program ) and Philadelphia area schools (Physician Scientist Training Program at Temple University) discussed careers in medicine and science with Symposium participants and scientists from the Bristol-Myers Squibb (NYSE:BMY) Pharmaceutical Research Institute headquarters, where the meeting was held. The students also explored virtual drug discovery using three-dimensional molecular modeling.

Seven ways to evaluate an education
By Gabriel H. Gluck and Padriac Cassidy Star-Ledger Staff How does your local high school stack up against the rest? It's a query that virtually all parents have pondered at one time or another because it gets to the central question: Am I giving my child the best chance at success? The Star-Ledger spent a portion of this summer devising a way to help parents answer these questions. The result is a ranking of every high school in the state, using seven distinct variables that, we believe, burrow to the heart of a top-notch education. To help ease the discrepancies caused by income differences, the high schools are ranked within the income groupings designated by the state Department of Education. There are eight income groups (called District Factor Groups, or DFGs). All the data used by The Star-Ledger are available to the public through the School Report Cards released each December. No other state in the country provides more school data to the public than does New Jersey in the School Report Cards. But the report cards don't attempt to interpret the data or rank the schools, as is done in states such as Texas.
