New Jersey is surrounded by water except along the 50 mi (80 km) of northern border with New York state. The northern third of the state lies within the Appalachian Highland region, where ridges running northeast and southwest shelter valleys containing pleasant streams and glacial lakes. Beyond the crest of wooded slopes are long-established farms given over to dairying and field crops. The Kittatinny Mts., with the state's highest elevations (up to 1,803 ft/550 m), stretch across the northwest corner of New Jersey from the New York border to the Delaware Water Gap . In 1961 New Jersey, along with three other states and the federal government, signed the Delaware River Basin Compact , providing for the control of water resources and rights throughout the Delaware River basin.

New Jersey is divided into four geological areas: the Appalachian Ridge and Valley, the Highlands, the Piedmont Plateau and the Coastal Plain, which covers 60% of the state. Moderated by the ocean, the average temperatures range from highs of 74 degrees (23 c) in mid-summer to lows of 30 degrees (-1 c) in January. The Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region is a mountainous area in the northwest corner of the state. It includes the Kittatinny Mountains and several valleys. The Mountains run parallel to the state’s northwestern border and the Delaware Water Gap cuts through the mountains to form one of the most scenic areas in the east. The Appalachian Valley lies southeast of the Kittatinny Mountains. Herds of dairy cattle graze on the grassy slopes of the valley and farmers raise apples and vegetables. The Highlands, also known as the New England Upland, lie southeast of the Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region. Flat-topped ridges of hard rock, called gneiss, cover much of the Highlands and many lakes nestle among the ridges. These lakes are important tourist attractions.

An Interview with Joel R. Panzer -
Ranch Geographer "I was in fourth or fifth grade and we had a geography test, " says Joel R. Panzer, an Environmental Planner for a ranch in Carmel California, "We had to name a peninsula and I remembered a peninsula was land surrounded by water on three sides - so I wrote that New Jersey was a peninsula." Well Panzer has come a long way since then and hadn't discovered geography yet. Then he went to college. "When I was an undergraduate majoring in industrial arts at Trenton State, I took a course on New Jersey geography," says Panzer, "I was drawn to it because, I had spent most of my life in New Jersey and I was able to see New Jersey from a different perspective." After taking a few more geography courses, Panzer decided to major in geography and minor in environmental studies and earth science. Courses in these minors reinforced and expanded his physical geography coursework. "I think my education was superb," says Panzer, "Even years later the concepts are still with me." Panzer took the opportunity to have internships while in college and his internship with the Butte County planning department is probably the job experience that landed him his first job. "The experience was valuable, looked good on a resume, and taught me skills that I was able to use later," says Panzer. Once he obtained his Master of Arts degree in Geography from California State University, Chico, Panzer worked in land use for the Planning Department for five years. After he finished working at the Planning Department, Panzer took a job on a 20,000-acre ranch in Carmel, California called Ranchos San Carlos and has worked there since 1990.

There never has been one New Jersey. Even in the colonial times it was officially divided between East Jersey and West Jersey. Then came the appellations North Jersey and South Jersey. And in recent years, we've been hearing more about a Central New Jersey - an area encompassing counties in the state's narrow middle that also has been called the Wealth Belt. New census numbers based on prerecession, pre-Sept. 11 surveys are out and they only go to reinforce the notion that the Garden State is made of more than one crop. The North has the richest counties, the Center has the biggest growth, and the South - well let's just say the South has space and is slowly catching up, especially in the amount of time it takes to drive to work. So what is it that North and Central Jersey have that South Jersey does not?
