Graduate Program in Communication Disorders Master's of Science for Teachers/Communication Disorders (MST/CD) Degree Offered: The Department of Communication Disorders continues to offer a Master of Science (MS) degree for students who wish to prepare to practice in a variety of job settings in speech-language pathology. The 43 credit MS program enables participants to meet the academic and practicum requirements of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) for the Certificate of Clinical Competence. The MST/CD degree represents a second option offered by the Department of Communication Disorders. This 30 credit program is intended for a specific audience: practicing speech-language therapists (referred to in NH as speech-language specialists) who need to complete graduate training in order to meet the federal requirements for qualified providers under I.D.E.A., and thus maintain their employment in school settings. This two year program meets and exceeds degree requirements stated by teacher certification divisions from the Department of Education in Maine and New Hampshire. Contact Us Certification A hundred years ago a person could enter the teaching profession with a relatively small amount of preparation. This is no longer true. Entering the teaching profession has required increasingly greater training over the years. Teaching today requires better preparation because of the knowledge explosion and because more is now known about how children learn. Today, virtually every state or province requires that prospective teachers hold a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree and a teaching certificate as well. To qualify for the certificate the student must complete a number of state-prescribed professional studies in education. STATE OF MICHIGAN In the state of Michigan the student who meets these requirements receives the Provisional teaching certificate, either elementary or secondary, which is valid for six years. The elementary certificate qualifies him to teach kindergarten through the fifth grade and his major and /or minor in grades 6-8 (exceptions are available for smaller schools). The secondary certificate qualifies him to teach the seventh through the twelfth grades. During the six year period following graduation, the new teacher should complete three years of actual teaching and a minimum of eighteen semester hours of course work in a planned program of study in college or in graduate school to receive a PROFESSIONAL certificate.

A program of studies is designed for each student based on the student's professional goals. With the careful combination of courses and practica, the program leads to New Hampshire teacher certification (K-3) and fulfills the Bureau of Licensing and Standards teacher and director certification requirements. An interview is required with the Director of the ECE Program to review transcripts and develop a program of studies. Taking into consideration previous course work and prior experiences, the program director reviews the required and elective courses for the certification area to determine: the sequence of the course work, waiver of courses, and any additional background preparation indicated by the General Education Studies Checklist. The student's prior teaching experiences are reviewed to determine the experiences needed to fulfill the practica requirements. Early field based experiences are tailored to the needs, competencies, and current and prior experiences of the applicant. A minimum of one credit of practicum is required. A 16-week internship in ECE will be designed based on the student's goals, objectives and background. Students choose two eight-week placements or one 16-week placement depending on certification requirements. Internship experience is required with children from birth to age six if not met by previous teaching experiences. Students applying for teacher certification complete a minimum of eight weeks in kindergarten through third grade as a part of their 16-week internship.
