For a small country, Nepal has great physical diversity, ranging from the Tarai Plainthe northern rim of the Gangetic Plain situated at about 300 meters above sea level in the southto the almost 8,800-meter-high Mount Everest, locally known as Sagarmatha (its Nepali name), in the north. From the lowland Tarai belt, landforms rise in successive hill and mountain ranges, including the stupendous rampart of the towering Himalayas, ultimately reaching the Tibetan Plateau beyond the Inner Himalayas. This rise in elevation is punctuated by valleys situated between mountain ranges. Within this maze of mountains, hills, ridges, and low valleys, elevational (altitudinal) changes rersulted in ecological variations. Nepal commonly is divided into three broad physiographic areas: the Mountain Region, the Hill Region, and the Tarai Region (see

Nepal is a long rectangular country with an area of 140,000 sqaure kilometres. Its altitude varies from 60-220m in the Gangetic Plain in the South, rising to 8,848m at the summit of Mount Everest in the North. The variation in climate, population and vegetation is as great as the variation in altitude. The mountain kingdom of Nepal is double the size of Tasmania, about the size of the UK and slightly smaller than the State of Georgia in the United States. It is bounded by Tibet to the North and India to the East, West and South. It has 8 out of 10 of the world's highest mountains; a land of such giant sentinels as Mount Everest, lhotse, Nuptse, Cho Oyu, Makalu, Dhaulagiri, Annapurna and many more. Physically, it is a four terraced country. The southern region (Terai) is primarily a marshy and malarial jungle and is the habitat of the tiger and the rhinoceros. The 30-40km wide lowland of the Terai runs along Nepal's 800km border with India. The Southeastern part of the terai is also Nepal's granary. North of the Terai are the hills. The first of these are the foothills called Churia Ghati (the Siwaliks) which are of modest height rarely above 1,500m. These are followed by the Mahabharat range which touches 3,000m, and parts of it, especially the fertile plateaus, are thickly populated.

The Kingdom of Nepal covers an area of 147,181 square kilometers, and stretches 145-241 kilometers north to south and 850 kilometers west to east. The country is located between India in the south and China in the north and longitudes 26 and 30 degrees north and longitudes 80 and 88 degrees east, Nepal is topographically divided into three regions: the Himalaya to the north, the hills consisting of the Mahabharat range and the Churia Hills, and the Terai to the kingdom. The highest point is Mt. Everest (8848m) in the north and the lowest point (70 meters above sea level) is located at Kechna Kalan of Jhapa District. Altitude increases as you travel south to north To the north temperatures are below -40 degrees Celsius and in the Terai, temperatures rise to +40 degrees Celsius in the summer. During June, July and August, the kingdom is influenced by monsoon clouds. White Himalayan peaks The Himalaya : The Himalayan range makes up the northern border of the country and represents 16% of the total land area of Nepal. Peaks like Mt. Everest (8848m), Kanchenjubga (8598m), and Dhaulagiri (8137m) are found here and sparse vegetation is found up to 4,500m. Some of Nepal's most beautiful animal and plant life are also found here. Nepal's geography The country can be divided into three main geographical regions:
The Terai (up to 200 m) The low-land Terai region which has a width of about 26 to 32 kilometres and a altitude of maximum 305 meters occupies about 17% of the total land area. The Terai constitutes the northern belt of the Gangatic Plains. The Terai is Nepal's most densely populated region. It is the country's most fertile stretch of land. the Terai has more than one million hectares of paddy fields. The Terai was almost entirely forested and was a zone where malaria was endemic. Today less than 50% of the forests now remains. Kechanakawal (Jhapa district) is the lowest point of the country with an altitude of 70 meters above sea level.
The Middle Zone (1,500 m to 6,000 m) The region of the Himalayan foothills forms a buffer zone between the Gangatic Plains to the south and the High Himalaya to the north. Immediately north of the Terai are the forested Churia Hills

The Gurungs and Magars live mainly in the west and the southern slopes of Annapurna, Himalchuli and Ganesh Himal mountains. The Rais, Limbus and Sunuwars inhabit also the slopes and valleys of eastern mid hills. The Sherpas live in the Himalayan region up to an average altitude of 4570 m. The Newars constitute an important ethnic group in the capital valley of Kathmandu. There are Tharus, Yadavas, Satar, Rajvanshis and Dhimals in the Terai region. The Brahmans, Chhetris and Thakuris are spread generally over most parts of the Kingdom. Many different ethnic groups have their own languages for dialects, but Nepali, the national language, written in Devenagari script, serves purposes of the the Kingdom's lingua franca in Nepal. the educated people speak and understand English as well.
Nepal's religion Hinduism and Buddhism constitutes two major religion of Nepal sharing between them some 87% and 8% of the total population. Both these co-religionists are bound together by a sense of fellow feeling and bonhomie particularly displayed in their worship of common deities and joint celebration of many festivals belonging to either religion culture. Kumari , the Virgin Hindu Goddess, for instance, is selected from a Buddhist clan. The Moslems form the third largest religion group with 3.5 percent. The temples and stupas are rich repositories of wood carvings, metal works, terra-cotta and stone culptures.

Geography of the Himalayas Learning Objective:
Compare the physical characteristics of places including soils, landforms, vegetation, wildlife, climate and natural hazards Teacher Directions:
The Himalayas are a great mountain system that is 1500 miles long and covering an area of 612,021 square kilometers. The Himalayas go through Northwestern Pakistan, Northern India, Southern Tibet, Nepal, Sikkim and Bhutan. The Himalayas are bordered on the north by Central Asia and bordered on the south by the plains of India. The Himalayan mountains are grouped into four parallel mountain belts: Shivaliks, Himachal, Himadri and Trans-Himalayas. The Shivaliks are the outer Himalayas and sub-Himalayas that rise out of the northern plains of India and Pakistan. They are the southernmost and have elevations of 900 to 1200 meters, or about 3,000 to 4,000 feet. The Himachal mountain belt is in the middle section of the mountain chain. The average altitude of mountains in this range is 3700 meters to 4500 meters (12,000-15,000 ft.). The Himachal belt extends southeast from Pakistan and through India and Nepal.

The Kingdom of Nepal , lying along the southern slopes of the Himalayan mountain ranges, is a landlocked country located between India to the east, south, and west and the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China to the north.
Nepal contains some of the most rugged and difficult mountain terrain in the world. From the south to the north, Nepal can be divided into four main physical belts, each of which extends east to west across the country. These are, first, the Tarai , a low, flat, fertile land adjacent to the border of India; second, the forested Churia foothills and the Inner Tarai zone, rising from the Tarai plain to the rugged Mahabharat Range; third, the mid-mountain region between the Mahabharat Range and the Great Himalayas; and, fourth, the Great Himalaya Range

    CLIMATE:
Nepal's climate, influenced by elevation as well as by its location in a subtropical latitude, ranges from subtropical monsoon conditions in the Tarai, through a warm temperate climate between 4,000 and 7,000 feet in the mid-mountain region, to cool temperate conditions in the higher parts of mountains between 7,000 and 11,000 feet, to an Alpine climate at altitudes between 14,000 and 16,000 feet along the lower slopes of the Himalaya mountains. At altitudes above 16,000 feet the temperature is always below freezing and the surface covered by snow and ice.
Rainfall is ample in the eastern portion of the Tarai (which receives from 70 to 75 inches [1,800 to 1,900 millimetres] a year at Biratnagar) and in the mountains, but the western portion of Nepal (where from 30 to 35 inches a year fall at Mahendranagar) is drier. Because warm rain-bearing monsoon winds discharge most of their moisture as they encounter the Annapurna range, rainfall is quite heavy (about 100 inches) in the Pokhara Valley. The average annual rainfall is about 55 inches, most of which falls in the period from June to September.
In Kathmandu Valley , average temperatures range from 50 F (10 C) in January to 78 F (26 C) in July, and the lowest and highest temperatures recorded have been 27 and 99 F (-3 and 37 C). At Pokhara the temperature ranges from 40 F (4 C) in January to approximately 100 F (38 C) in June, just before the monsoon. In winter, temperatures during the day rise to 70 F (21 C), creating pleasant conditions, with cool nights and warm days.

Academic Standards Our Aims The School Library Business Studies ... Physical Education, Outdoor Education “What is our knowledge worth if we know nothing about the world that sustains us, nothing about natural systems and climate, and nothing about other countries and cultures?” (Jonathan Porritt, an environmentalist) At The British School, Geography is an important part of the curriculum throughout all Key Stages. We are lucky that our host country is so interesting in geographical terms for students (and teachers of Geography for that matter!). Nepal is a country where the elevation ranges from near sea level to the highest point on earth, making Nepal a fascinating place to study physical geography. The study of human geography is enhanced by the fact that Nepal has been described as the ‘ethnic turntable of Asia’. At TBS we adapt the UK National Curriculum allowing students to develop the geographical skills that are taught in the UK, while remaining relevant to students in an international context. These skills include aspects of presentation, interpretative skills and map skills. ICT is widely used in teaching geography. All students carry out and enjoy appropriate aspects of fieldwork which allow us to take Geography outside the classroom. Regular trips include a river study in the jungles of Southern Nepal, trips to the Kathmandu Valley rim and adjacent valleys and a settlement enquiry in Kathmandu city centre.

Pashmina Tourism Hotels Trekking Agencies Safaries Situated between longitudes 80°4' to 88°12' east and latitudes 26°22' to 30°27' north, Nepal is a landlocked country encompassing an area of 145,391 square kilometers. The country is almost rectangular in shape with its 120 to 240 kilometers width and nearly 900 kilometers length wedged between the two Asian giants of China and India. Within this small area lies one the most diverse topographies and varied plant and animal life to found in the world. This is but to be expected in a country where the land rises from a lowly 67 meters above sea level all the way to the top of Mount Everest at 8,848 meters in a distance of 100 kilometers or so. Geographically, Nepal can be divided into seven regions going east to west. Although these divisions have mainly to do with altitude, they are equally different in the physical terrain as well. All across the south is the Tarai lowlands, an extension of the Indo-Gangetic plain into the political borders of Nepal, touches the hills and mountains further north. These plains, which stretch the length of the country with an average width of around 30 kilometers, is the bread basket of Nepal. Till a few decades back, the Tarai was covered with wide expanses of jungle. These malaria-infested forests served as an effective barrier against any would-be adventurer and helped further in Nepal’s total isolation until the 1950’s. Wide swathes of jungle can still be found all over the Tarai but the work of the axe is evident everywhere. It was to the Tarai that the people migrated as population pressure pushed them out of their limited land holdings in the hills. No wonder that this region is also the geographical zone which has the highest concentration of people in the country.
