Nepal: Geography Destinations in Nepal
Annapurna Conservation Area
Chitwan National Park Helambu Kanchenjunga ... The Terai
Location: Southern Asia, between China and India
Arriving in Nepal, the traveler enters an area which is unique in its orographic, botanical and zoological diversity. The geo-historical origins of the imposing Himalayan range, which comprises a considerable portion of Nepal, tell a fascinating story. Through our understanding of plate tectonics, from which the theory of continental drift is derived, we know that the Indian continental plate separated from the old southern continent of Gondwanaland and moved north, where it slid under the old Eurasian plate. In the process, the southerly Sea of Tethys narrowed, and when at the meeting point of the two plates the Himalayas emerged, the sediments of this sea were pushed up in the process. The fossils of sea animals at a height of over 4,000 meters are proof of this.

Benares: The Sacred City of the Hindus
by M A Sherring
Benares, Kashi or Varanasi this illustrious place of pilgrimage and idealised nucleus of faith has been likened to Jerusalem or Mecca. It is acknowledged throughout the world as a centre of Hindu tradition and a seat of ancient learning. It is a city where infinity and continuity, the past and present, live together. There are few cities in the world of greater antiquity and none that have so uninterruptedly maintained their ancient celebrity and distinction.
This book, written just after the freedom struggle of 1857, offers a piercing insight into the culture of Benares as seen through the eyes of a European at that time.
The book will also tell you why this city has been for over two and a half thousand years the pre-eminent sacred city of the Hindus and why it has a primary status on the cultural map of India.

Be a Detective
Purpose: To relate the themes of location, place, movement, region, and relationship to the geography and culture of Nepal. Materials:
  • "Be a Detective" Map Activities:
  • Have students work individually or in pairs to spot the three errors on the map of the world. Correct the errors as a class using available wall maps, globes, or atlases. Repeat the activity on successive days until students can make corrections without using maps or globes.
  • Using available maps have students work in pairs to add the following labels to their corrected maps: equator, prime meridian, the Cameroon, Honduras, Kyrgyzstan, Lesotho, Lithuania, Nepal, Paraguay, Poland, Senegal, Sri Lanka. (NB: These are some of the countries for which WWS has made "Destination" videos.
  • Have students make their own "mis-maps" by altering and then copying or tracing the "Be a Detective" worksheet. Have pairs of students trade their "mis-maps," find the errors, and correct them.
