    Geography
Landlocked between the two giants of China and India, Nepal is a small country approximately 800km east to west by 200km north to south, with a total area of around 146,000 square km. Within the 200km north to south there is tremendous range of elevation, as the country rises abruptly from around 150m in the southern lowlands to the colossal peaks of the Himalaya in the north, with the summit of Mt. Everest the highest point on earth at 8,848m. The country is divided into 3 main geographical regions running east to west: the Himalaya, the middle hills (Mahabharat and Siwalik) and the Terai. To the south of the Himalaya are the Mahabharat rising to 4877m. These occupy about half of the countries total area and is itself occupied by around 50% of the population. Both the Kathmandu and Pokhara valleys are in the middle hills. Dividing the Mahabharat from the Terai are the Siwalik (or Churia) hills ranging between 600m and 1500m. The Terai is a continuation of the Indo-gangetic plain and forms the southern border with India. Originally this area was dense jungle but now has only 10% of the country's forest cover. The land of the Terai is rich and fertile and nearly 60% of the country's cultivated land is to be found in this area which is home to just under half of the country's population.
