Digging into Native American Legends by Jeanette Krizak, Mary Cuellar and Joyce Stevens Introduction Task Resources ... Lesson Plan
Introduction Your stomach aches with hunger; your feet and head are drenched in sweat. Your only hope for survival: one good long day of rain to quench the crops that provide your only food source. According to a popular legend, Native Americans in Texas faced this grim prospect and responded by sacrificing their most prized possessions to their gods. As a result, rain fell, squelching the drought and famine that made food scarce and living almost unbearable. Blue flowers subsequently carpeted the hills where they lived, flowers we know as bluebonnets. You will be a member of a team of anthropologists seeking more information about the culture of Native Americans through the study of native folktales and history. Your mission: decide how these stories contributed to ethnic culture and alleviated the hardships native people faced. The Task You will be one member of a team of "anthropologists." Your team will "dig" through online and off-line resources for a Native American folktale, analyze it, and communicate the tale's role in educating us about this culture. Each member of the team will choose a role:
    • Chief Researcher - checks provided net links and library resources, then selects an appropriate folktale or legend for the entire group to study. Then oversees project and works with a team member to analyze and evaluate components in the tale: plot, characters and conflict resolution in a concept-webbing map produced with Inspiration software.

Contact Us ABC Gives Green Light to Native American Miniseries HOLLYWOOD (Variety) January 17 - The myths and legends of Native American culture will come to life via ``Dreamkeeper,'' a $30 million-plus miniseries just greenlit by ABC. The tentatively titled four-hour epic will use special effects to dramatize seven or eight Native American legends, such as the story of a rain god who falls in love with a mortal woman; another is about an outcast child who attempts to tame a water beast, thus saving his town. The project will feature a cast made up almost entirely of Native American actors; a huge chunk of the crew also is expected to be Native American. Production is set to begin May 1 with an air date targeted for November 2003. Wrapped around the mythology will be the story of a 17-year-old Native American boy (Eddie Spears) who, against his will, is forced to drive his 100-year-old grandfather to an annual storytelling powwow. During their drive from South Dakota to Santa Fe, the grandfather recounts the stories of his culture to his grandson, ultimately convincing the teen of the importance of his heritage.

Cherokee Myths And Legends By Lowell Kirk The Cherokee, like other native Americans, did not worship spirits and icons, but believed in one Supreme Being. They lived in harmony with their natural environment. It was their myths and sacred formulas, developed over thousands of years and passed orally from generation to generation, which helped them to do this. Myths may or may not have any bases in fact. But they become institutionalized as "truth" and have a great influence in the cultural behavior of individuals, groups and communities. They are used to teach the young many of the important lessons of life. The Cherokee chose special persons in special linages to pass on their oral traditions. Great care was taken to maintain the purity of such traditions. Virtually every aspect of the Cherokee life and the Cherokee environment had a story to explain it. A Water Spider with black downy hair and red stripes on her body brought fire to the Cherokee, after much frustrating effort. The story of the origin of core (Selu) and game (Kana’ti) includes a reference to a tribe of cannibals (Roasters or Anada’ duntaski). Kana’ti, the father, was the Lucky Hunter and Selu was his wife. Every disease was created and put on the Cherokee man by the animals. This was a revenge for man killing the animals. However, the plants, which were friendly to man, decided to furnish a remedy to counteract the evil wrought by the vengeful animals.
