Native American Legends, Folk Tales, and Stories
Native American mythology is a very rich cultural history of its own. In the telling of tales, many things can be taught or learned. This is one of the ways that many tribes kept their cultures alive; it was not just a collection of stories, but of their beliefs, their ways, and their lives. Many legends are still told; some old, some new, but all are part of the beautiful culture that the indigenous peoples of North America have had and still have. In the telling of some of these stories, I will be handing along things that were told from grandmother to granddaughter; grandfather to grandson, for many generations. These stories, in and of themselves, are near to sacred for many groups of people. I honor each of you who read these stories with them; I wish you well, and hope that you all learn some of the history and understanding of these Native peoples. There are many different kinds of stories. There are some that are called "hero stories"; these are stories of people who lived at one time, and who were immortalized by these stories of them. There are "trickster stories", about the different trickster figures of the tribes (Saynday for the Kiowa; Coyote for the Navajo (Dine'); and so on, who were both helpful and dangerous figures in the belief. There are tales that are simply warnings; they warn against doing something that may harm in some way. And there are many other types as well. In reading these tales, you may notice that many, if not all, have morals or some form of belief that is being taught; these are the teachings of the storytellers. This is how the things were remembered.

They came from Siberia and spread out forming communities in many different places. They each had to adapt to the environment in which they settled and so their stories and mythologies varied. There are however tales which seem to appear in most, if not all these societies. Vision Quest Many Native Americans believe that each person has a guardian spirit, a helper who guides them and assists in the hunt, but this guardian is not apparent to them until they reach puberty. Therefore, at the age of 13 or 14, children (more often boys) are sent out on their vision quest. They go to a remote place, and attempt to make contact with their personal spirit. They will fast and pray in silence for days and in some cases, injure themselves to bring them closer to the spirit world, and achieve their vision. When they finally reached this level they supposedly saw their spirit before them, often in the form of a bird or animal. Some children became seriously ill around this time, they claimed that the spirits had come to them, and they had received sacred knowledge and healing. These individuals became the 'shaman' of the group.

PORCH NUS The E-Zine of The Front Porch Religions of the World Native American Spirituality Native American Spirituality might be defined as the indigenous religious traditions of the many peoples who inhabited the Americas prior to contact with Europeans from 1492 onward. The customs, rituals and iconography varied tremendously throughout the Americas. Attempting to compare them with the formalized written traditions of Asia, Europe and the Middle East is an exercise in futility. Native American Spirituality was (and is, for those still practicing it) part and parcel of living. It involved a relationship with the natural world as opposed to a weekly or daily schedule of worship services. With few exceptions there was no priesthood or system of temples. Above all, there was no written record and, but for a very few cases, no inscriptions or monuments.

Background
Archeological evidence indicates that Native American tribes lived in the Yellowstone area almost 10,000 years ago; a major trail these tribes used for tracking bison goes right through the park. Some of the tribes that traveled or lived nearby include the Shoshone, Bannock, Blackfoot, Flathead, Nez Perce, Utes, Crows, Piegans, and Paiutes.
Imagine what Native Americans must have thought when they first saw the park's geysers, mudpots, and hot springs! As in other cultures, Native American culture is rich in myths and legends that were used to explain natural phenomena that they didn't understand. The most common myths are the creation myths, that tell a story to explain how the earth was formed. Others include explanations about the sun, moon, constellations, animals, seasons, and weather. In this lesson, students will review some of these myths and then write their own myths to explain how the geologic features of Yellowstone came to be. Objectives Students will:
  • read Native American myths
  • summarize the myths in class discussions
  • write their own myths

The Sayings and Psalms of Bob Marley

Tuff Gong Books, all ages
Bob Marley began writing lyrics in the early 1960s and he continued to produce them until his passing in 1981. Critics have called his songs the best of the millenium. Yet, few readers have ever read marley's magic on the page. Eldest daughter Cedella has made a selection of her father's most prophetic and personal poems, insights, and conversational messages. Here are meditations to soothe the soul and thoughts to penetrate the mind. In his spare writings we see the ebb and flow of his journey as an artist and a humanitarian. ETHN151 - Native American Women Upcoming 2001/02 - This course will focus on traditional, non-traditional, and contemporary roles of native women. It will also examine how these roles relate to both Indian and non-Indian societies. The course will provide the opportunity to explore native women's issues through histories, literatures, and oral traditions, focusing on Native American women's perspective. Colonization has drastically impacted native women and the lives of their families, nations and communities. Resistance and de-colonization efforts by native women will be illuminated and analyzed. Over the years, many stereotypes and misconceptions have existed about native women and many of their voices have remained silenced. By placing native women as active participants and presenting their issues, these misconceptions will be challenged. 3 units. ETHN050 - Native American Religion and Philosophy.

Most of these books refer at least in part to Shamanism, or to Native American religious practices. Some books are included more for their cultural referents than the specifically-spiritual aspects, since there's a fair bit of intertwining, even if a few of these books don't dwell on those aspects. Most of the political history books are unrated. Ratings of the below are reasonably subjective. * - Pretty good
** - More than pretty good
*** - Highly recommended!!! This is by no means a final list of what is available I have purposefully omitted some books, while other books which may be good just have not come into my possession. Yet. Jehana Silverwing
