Native American Issues Montana's tribes bring a rich history and culture full of long-standing traditions to our state. I'm committed to boosting the economic health of our reservations and in our Indian communities while also protecting their heritage. It's important for the entire delegation to work together with our tribal leaders and the Interior Department to provide the needed resources to help our Native American communities flourish. In 2001, I was proud to co-host a Tribal Economic Development Summit with Senator Mike Enzi of Wyoming. The summit focused on strengthening education and training opportunities on the reservations and increasing availability of needed services. The summit also focused on creating partnerships between tribal and non-tribal entities, on and off the reservation. I'm dedicated to ensuring that no community is left behind as we move our economy forward, especially the Native American community that has given and continues to give so much to our state. Native American Art, Crafts, Culture, Religion The Mystic Warriors of the Plains Thomas E. Mails This book is our "bible" when it comes to information on Plains Indian culture, lifestyle, crafts, tools, weapons, and etc. You name it, this book has it all. Detailed sketches (over 1000) and descriptions of just how these people made the items used during their daily life. Highly Recommended Fools Crow : Wisdom and Power
by Thomas E. Mails This is an excellent account of the life of Frank Fools Crow, Lakota Medicine Man and Spiritual leader of his people during the early reservation period. This powerful writing details Fools Crows healing powers that he used only to help his people. Mails tells the poignant story of how Fools Crow struggled to keep alcohol off the reservations and to keep his people focused upon their ancient cultural ways and tribal traditions. I had the honor of meeting Frank Fools Crow just a year before his passing. He body was old and weak, but the light of life and wisdom in his eyes was clear and powerful. and concerned nonprofit foundations has enabled HUNAP to build key institutionalinfrastructure that is needed to move native american issues into the teaching
http://www.ksg.harvard.edu/hunap/about.html
Friends and Colleagues: On behalf of the Harvard University Native American Program (HUNAP), I extend a warm welcome to all! While HUNAP has existed in various forms since its inception in 1970 as a program to train Native American leaders in the field of education, only recently has it been designated as one of Harvard's twelve Interfaculty Initiatives. Consistent with the Harvard University charter of 1650 calling for the "education of English and Indian youth," HUNAP has developed partnerships with established faculties at Harvard to build viable programs of research, teaching, and outreach on issues affecting the lives of indigenous peoples. While these scholarly activities are central to the mission of the program and of a great university, HUNAP maintains a strong emphasis on student support and development. We invite you to browse the features of our program and share our excitement as Harvard University reinvigorates its commitment to American Indian issues, students, leaders, and nations. Ken Pepion, Ph.D.

The story touches on the leadership of the American Indian Movement that was involved in the 1973 shootout at Wounded Knee. The incident garnered national attention when two FBI agents were killed, along with a young Lakota tribal member. Our story begins with the recent arrest of Arlo Looking Cloud on federal charges of first degree murder, 27 years after he allegedly helped put Indian activist Anna Mae Pictou Aquash (picture) to death. The investigation of the case has been filled with intrigue and mystery, and this and coming arrests are top news in Indian Country. Now, as information is starting to come out about the case, Anna Mae Pictou Aquash's family has released a statement. As a courtesy to the family, who is trying to preserve its privacy, and to the press, which desires a statement from them, we are providing the statement of Debbie Maloney Pictou in its entirety. Debbie is the daughter of Aquash. Additional information can be found at
