Comments on Homework #10
This assignment was rather different than most of the preceding assignments, as it was far more open-ended. We were pleased to see that it generated a wide range of differing opinions on the role of non-standard dialects of English in education: these opinions were often quite interesting, well-informed, and cogently argued. Here are some thoughts on issues that were raised. On the other hand, we were disappointed to see that a number of people seem to have misunderstood the issue that was being debated, despite explicit guidelines in the instructions for the homework. None of the opinions under considerations are denying that mastery of 'standard' or literary English is a primary goal of education. What was under discussion was how best to achieve this goal in the case of children whose primary spoken language differs from this standard in many respects, and whether understanding of these differences could aid in mastery of the standard. not Some thoughts on what we read...
A Common Misconception
In the wake of the Oakland School Board resolution about Ebonics a widespread misconception arose that the Oakland School Board was (a) advocating Black English as the exclusive language of its students, (b) proposing course in how to read and write Black English. This misconception was probably due in part to poor wording of the OSB's original resolution, in part to the inability of sound-bite oriented public figures to comprehend the proposal, and in part to malicious twisting of the proposal in order to bring it into ill-favor.

Raised beds help when soil is poor
AP Clint Chamberlain of Corpus Christi, Texas, inspects a raised bed at the Corpus Christi Botanical Gardens. Both the sharp edging and raised soil create a friendly growing environment. By Ed Hutchinson
FOR THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
The term “native soil” sounds friendly enough, conjuring up images of rich, crumbly dark brown soil — soil in the garden and lawn that is fertile, rich in nutrients, quick to drain and enables plants and grass to grow beautifully and effortlessly.
Native soil may be anything than friendly. It may be heavy with clay or light with sand. The pH may be out of kilter. It may be compacted because of earthwork done recently or years ago. Native soil refers to the soil we have in our yard even though technically there may not be too much native about it because of how the neighborhood was developed or the land tilled.

by Dr Antonio R. Roldán Tapia
Alhaken II High School / University of Córdoba, Spain , December 2001 INTRODUCTION Teaching and learning English in many European countries means having a British-centred view of the language, its speakers and their culture(s). It is something to be expected because of the short distance between the UK and the continent, and because of the influence of publishers based in Britain. I do not want to say that this is wrong, but it gives students a restricted knowledge of the language and its culture. By taking a look at popular textbooks, it can be noted that students can only find a little information about the States, like the American flag, a picture of the White House and something else....hamburgers and cola. The purpose of this article is to share how other native speakers’ cultures can be learnt at school, independently of the textbook we are using. Because of my personal and professional experience, I have tried to teach my students about the USA and American culture.

It was worth waiting through all those "NOT AVAILABLE NOW" messages while they were working on their website! Two methods of searching are available:
  • "global search" - Just type in your ancestor's name on the search tab data fields, and press enter. Matching names from all databases at the site will show up on the hit list. Entries from the IGI, Ancestral File, etc. may be listed in addition to any matching entries in the census records. "specific census search" - diagram shown below. English 12: AP Shakespeare (1st Sem.)
  • Objective: This is an advanced course in literature and writing. In addition to the study of literature, students are required to develop their own writing and grammar skills through creative writing, essay assignments and a research paper on some element of Romanticism. Students are also required to complete regular assignments from grammar and ACT preparation booklets as well as vocabulary lists drawn from reading and SAT lists. The bulk of class time however, is spent in dialogue with the students regarding the literature they're studying. During the first semester, students study Shakespearean poetry, and plays. The second semester includes novels, short stories, poetry and films of the American West.
  • Relationship to other courses: The literature studied coincides with the students' Senior Seminar class. Literature is an important tool in developing understanding and appreciation of historical and current events. This course also helps students prepare themselves for the Advanced Placement exam and college boards.
  • Required reading: For the writing and grammar part of this course, students will be using

To start with, we teach more students than any other program in the university. In Fall 1999 we taught undergraduates in freshman, intermediate, and advanced composition courses (a total of 106 sections). For these classes, we had TAs and adjuncts, including TAs from American Studies, the Law School, History, Education, Anthropology, Theater Arts, Linguistics, Archaeology, Speech Communication, and Political Science. Composition now has courses for graduates as well as undergraduates. In fall 1999, for the first time, we offered a writing course for graduate students who are non-native English speakers. Brown-Bag Lunches For the first time in 1999, we offered a series of brown-bag lunches, designed for all students in composition courses.

Nutritional Origins of Insulin Resistance
"…He punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation." - Exodus 34:7b What your grandmother ate during pregnancy may influence your risk for diabetes , according to a recent study published in the Journal of Nutrition.
"...The Pima Indians are giving a great gift to the world by continuing to volunteer for research studies." - Dr. Peter Bennett, Chief of Clinical Research - NIDDK.
There is little doubt that a mother's diet during pregnancy has an affect on her newborn. In fact, malnourishment during gestation can have significant health consequences that carry through adulthood. Little attention, however, has been given to the relationships between generations beyond a mother and her child. If a woman’s food intake has an impact on her grandchildren and generations beyond, public health messages may need to re-focus on nutritional integrity of pregnant mothers.
