The Napoleonic wars 1803 - 1815 Following the French Revolution, Napoleon I of France began a series of European wars. His aim was the conquest of Europe. In 1803, Britain resumed war against France, following an appeal from the Maltese (objecting to Napoleon's seizure of the island in 1798). In 1805, Napoleon's planned invasion of Britain from Boulogne ended with Nelson's victory at Trafalgar, and in 1806, Napoleon instituted an attempted blockade - 'the Continental System' - to isolate Britain from Europe. This finally collapsed after its rejection by Russia. Napoleon then made the fatal decision to invade Russia and was defeated by the Russian resistance, losing some 380,000 men. Britain, Prussia, Russia, Austria and Sweden formed a new coalition, which defeated Napoleon at the Battle of the Nations at Leipzig, Germany. Napoleon abdicated and was exiled to the island of Elba. He returned to Paris in 1815, but was finally defeated at Waterloo by Wellington and his Prussian allies, on 18 June that year.

History War ... Help Like this page? Send it to a friend! The Battle of Waterloo 1 of 4 Introduction Preparing for battle The Battle Why did Napoleon lose? ... Printable Version Forces at the Battle of Waterloo Introduction The Protagonists Napoleon Bonaparte had always been driven by his desire to make France a European empire and was an experienced warlord and leader. He had carried out a coup against the government of the First Republic of France (the 'Directory') in 1799 and established himself as ruler and First Consul, eventually to declare himself First Consul for life and Emperor in 1804. In 1802 the French Republic was officially recognised and the Peace of Amiens signed. Napoleon had higher ambitions and pursued his desire to make France the most powerful country in Europe by conquering other countries including Britain. In 1803, Britain declared war on France and the ensuing 'Napoleonic Wars' were fought between France and various Allied coalitions over the next 11 years. The Allies successfully invaded in 1814 and forced Napoleon to abdicate at the Treaty of Fontainbleau. Napoleon described Britain as 'the most powerful and most constant…of my enemies' The Allied army under the Duke of Wellington was a coalition of British, Dutch, Belgian and German soldiers. Napoleon described Britain as 'the most powerful and most constant … of my enemies'. Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington, had never been beaten by the French and had a reputation as a talented coalition general. He came to prominence in India and then successfully directed the Peninsular Campaign of 1811 when the British went to support Portugal and Spain against Napoleon. He was made a duke at the end of that war and appointed ambassador to the restored Bourbon court in 1814.

EUROPE
A BACKGROUND TO THE NAPOLEONIC WARS By P L Kessler
Part 1
Part 2
AT FIRST, the sheer amount of data available to a new student of the Napoleonic Wars can be daunting and confusing. A brief glance at the historical background to the Wars, from the middle of the 18th century, right up to the defeat of Napoleon and exile to St Helena, is an excellent way of starting to understand what it was all about.
Chronology
Wellington and Napoleon were both born, one in Ireland as Arthur Wesley, the other in Corsica. Also born this year were General Sir John Moore, and Marshals Ney, Lannes and Soult.
Napoleon emerged as a junior artillery officer from Brienne Military Academy.
The French revolted against their aristocrat overlords. On 14th July the Bastille was stormed, primarily for ammunition for captured muskets.
The 1st Coalition was formed against Revolutionary France by Austria and Prussia and their troops were mobilised.
In February, Britain, Spain and Holland (The United Provinces) declared war on France. In May the Holy Roman Emperor's armies besieged Mainz. By October Imperial and Prussian troops had stormed the Weissenburg Lines and secured the Rhine frontier for the winter. Captain Bonaparte earned whirlwind promotion to général de brigade within three months of his spectacular conduct at the siege of Toulon in December, where he dislodged the Anglo-Spanish Fleet. At the same time, 18th to 22nd December, the French attacked and broke through the Rhine border defences.

A MILITARY HISTORY AND ATLAS OF THE NAPOLEONIC WARS
by Brigadier General Vincent J. Esposito and Colonel John R. Elting CONTENT:
This superb historical atlas is a seminal work on the Napoleonic Wars and provides a comprehensive overview of the battles and campaigns of Napoleon Bonaparte between 1796 and 1815. With 169 maps charting the course of twelve crucial campaigns and detailing the key phases of such major battles as Marengo, Austerlitz and Borodino, this valuable atlas illustrates the breadth of Napoleon's concept of war, his grasp of strategy and his complete mastery of battlefield tactics. The large, colour maps allow the reader to follow the course of any campaign and highlight the importance of terrain, time and distance. They are complemented by a full narrative history which describes the dramatic military events of the period and their impact on warfare and military thinking. Each successive campaign move is detailed, the strengths of each side are analysed and their errors and failings are also fully examined. The atlas covers Napoleon's Italian campaigns 1796-1797; the Egyptian campaign; Marengo; Austerlitz; Jena; Friedland; the invasion of Spain; the Danube campaign of 1809; the invasion of Russia; the 1813 campaign; the defence of France; and the Hundred Days. An additional Appendix gives biographical details of leading military personalities, and a critical Recommended Reading List assesses hundreds of works on this formative period.

From the Napoleonic wars to the "Pre-March Period"
The city continued to maintain its defence walls, even at a time when other cities in Europe were beginning to "defortify" on a massive scale. What little protection they could actually provide was shown in the early 19th century when Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte occupied Vienna in 1805 and 1809 and had large parts of the fortifications blasted away upon his departure in autumn 1809 to demonstrate his military prowess. Vienna failed to turn this into an opportunity for modernisation. On the contrary, one of the hallmarks of the restoration period in Austrian politics during the era of Chancellor Metternich (until 1848) was the complete absence of any thought of razing the defences. In fact, the destruction of the Napoleonic wars was not sufficiently made use of to launch an urban expansion drive, except, to some extent, in Hofburg Palace, although even there a new city gate, the , was built. Incidentally, it is the last surviving monument of the old times. Particularly during the decades of the so-called "Pre-March Period", i.e. from the Congress of Vienna (1814-15) to the revolution in March 1848, modernisation of the building stock and infrastructure began to be more and more urgent. Extraordinarily disparate developments and tendencies characterised this pre-revolutionary period. On the one hand, Vienna experienced an age of cultural excellence, and mention must be made in this context of such composers as
