The Carter Resource Library
"Without music, the soul is silent. Without education, the world is dark"
- Melia M. Peavey 1954-1998 The Mississippi Forum on Children and Families celebrated the opening of the Peavey Parent Resource Center and the Carter Resource Library on August 20, 1998. A crowd of over 100 guests paid tribute to the memory of the late Melia Peavey and the late Wiley Carter for whom the center and library were named. Melia McRae Peavey, the former president of Peavey Electronic, joined forces with the Forum in 1993 to establish the Corporate Fund for Children. The resources of the fund laid the foundation for the continued development of parent education programming in Mississippi. As administrative assistant to Senator Thad Cochran, Wiley Carter worked on behalf of Mississippians for twenty-three years. His commitment to constituent needs played an important role in securing funding through the Goals 2000: Educate America Act for the parent center. A major gift from the Hardin Foundation funded the furnishing of the parent center library and the development of an Internet site. The BellSouth Foundation provided support for a new home-school-community initiative, Mississippi's Children are Born to Learn and Their Communities are Full of Teachers, that was also announced at the dedication ceremonies.

    Community Parent Engagement - Resources
Overview Programs Resources What a Student Should Know and Be Able To Do This is what parents and other citizens who attended last fall's town meeting on education said they want to know. Concurrently, this is what the standards movement in forty-nine states is all about - helping parents, teachers, students and anyone interested, know what is expected of students in each grade and subject. "How can we be expected to reinforce learning at home, if we don't even know what our child is expected to learn?" is the outcry from many parents who want to support the learning process but are left without many tools with which to do it. Mississippi's new system of assessment and accountability includes helping parents become aware of exactly what students should be learning. Competencies and benchmarks for learning, previously available in curriculum frameworks primarily for teachers, are now available to parents in a variety of formats. Competencies in language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, technology, vocational education and fine arts can be downloaded from the Internet. They are also available in a number of publications from, in addition to local schools, churches and parent centers listed on the back of this insert. Student Expectations: A Family Guide for Student Success Mississippi Student Expectations booklets, developed by the Mississippi Department of Education, outline what your child should learn in each subject (reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, and fine arts) in his or her grade. They are available for each grade level from kindergarten through eighth grade and are currently being sent to all schools in Mississippi. They also provide helpful hints to use at home to encourage your child's academic growth. The booklets represent what all students should know and be able to do at the end of each grade level. The achievement of the expectations will help your child meet the assessment standards established by the state of Mississippi. The booklet for your child's grade may be obtained at your child's school by the end of October. Be sure to get your copy.
