Established in 1993, the Center serves as a primary point of contact for dealing with the problem of school violence. The Center focuses on ensuring that schools are safe and secure so that every student is able to attend a school that is safe and secure, one that is free of fear and conducive to learning. Violence in America has reached epidemic proportions. Today, all Americans are touched directly or indirectly by violent acts. In response, the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence (CSPV) was founded in 1992 with a grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York to provide informed assistance to groups committed to understanding and preventing violence, particularly adolescent violence. Since that time, our mission has expanded to encompass violence across the life course. Located at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

    http://www.ncjrs.org/txtfiles/fs000189.txt

This NIJ Research report presents preliminary findings from a multistage study on adolescent violence, which draws from theories of cognitive and developmental psychology to construct a framework for understanding violent behavior. Unfortunately, typical studies on violence cannot explain the occurrence of a violent eventthat mixture of motivation, context, and facilitation that channels arousal into actual violence. The findings from this study indicate that adolescents should be taught negotiating and conflict avoidance skills under conditions that mimic the unpredictable nature of the street.

As Michigan's poet bard, Terry Wooten has a special gift for helping people relate to poetry and enjoy it. Offering more than ninety poets' work from which his audience can select, he recites in juke-box fashion their requests whether the audience is 5 or 50.
Terry's oral repertoire of over eight hours includes poems by many well-know poets from Chaucer to Whitman as well as his own poems. He is a living anthology of classic literature, folklore, children's and contemporary poetry, presented in an educational and entertaining package. The range of his selections run rich in humor or can reflect the more serious issues of our modern times. His performances are variable and can be arranged specifically for any age group.
Terry also shares his experience as a published poet and bard in a variety of writing workshops (grade 4 to adult). He offers tips to students on finding their own writing styles, working with line structure, eliminating "nerd words," working with "stolen voices," and to use memory as a natural magnifier. A culminating activity can be a school or community performance presented by the students with Terry.
Terry's influence is evident in the many schools who have developed stone circle formats with their students. Patterned after his own Stone Circle, he coaches schools on how to create a focus for their students' writings. Inspired by his infectious style of of presentation, Terry has sparked new interest for students by linking the written and the spoken word through the oral tradition, as they share in this exciting recipe for communication.

This collection presents 163 Sunday school books published in America between 1815 and 1865, drawn from the collections of Michigan State University Libraries and the Clarke Historical Library at Central Michigan University Libraries. They document the culture of religious instruction of youth in America during the Antebellum era. They also illustrate a number of thematic divisions that preoccupied nineteenth-century America, including sacred and secular, natural and divine, civilized and savage, rural and industrial, adult and child. Among the topics featured are history, holidays, slavery, African Americans, Native Americans, travel and missionary accounts, death and dying, poverty, temperance, immigrants, and advice. The mission of the Library of Congress is to make its resources available and useful to Congress and the American people and to sustain and preserve a universal collection of knowledge and creativity for future generations. The goal of the Library's National Digital Library Program is to offer broad public access to a wide range of historical and cultural documents as a contribution to education and lifelong learning. Digital collections from other institutions complement and enhance the Library's own resources. The Library of Congress presents these documents as part of the record of the past. These primary historical documents reflect the attitudes, perspectives, and beliefs of different times. The Library of Congress, Michigan State University, and Central Michigan University do not endorse the views expressed in these collections, which may contain materials offensive to some readers.
