NV30 With 400MHz but Limited Memory

Description
According to the latest NV30 rumours, leaked information suggests that the NV30 range of cards will feature clock speeds centred around the 400 MHz mark. Although initially nVidia had suggested that they were aiming for lower clock speeds than that, it is slowly becoming evident that 400 MHz is what the graphics company will rely on.
Other information about the upcoming chip remains as it was. It will carry 8 pipelines and will consist of 120 million transistors built on the 0.13 micron process.
What does seem, initially, to be worrying for all nVidia fans is that the card will almost certainly rely on a 128 Mbit memory. Yup that is half compared to the 256 Mbits (DDR) which the 9700 and 9700 Pro's carry. It is of course unlikely that nVidia will not go out of their way to demonstrate how they have compensated for that and still managed to produce a top notch card.
It seems that benchmarks will once again rule the net.

The Evolution Of The Memory Chip
The first few generations of DOS computer used Dual In Line (DIL) memory chips and since 1981 (when the PC computer was designed) memory chip technology increased the capacity of RAM Chips in steps of four times capacity, regularly. The first IBM PC used 16K by 1 bit RAM chips. Soon 64K by 1 bit chips were available and in regular use. The 256K by 1 bit made 640K on the system board possible. The original PC had a nine bit memory word, where the extra bit was used for Parity. Parity is a means of checking for errors in data stored in a memory. The parity bit is set to either a Zero or a One depending on the number of ones in the word when the word is written into the memory. When that same location is read, the parity bit in the memory is checked against a parity bit generated from the data that is read from memory. If an error is detected the user is notified of the problem. Not all DOS computers are fitted with parity chips.

The first few generations of DOS computers used Dual-in-line RAM chips. Over the years these devices increased from 16K bits in the first IBM PC, 64k bit chips used in the first clone PC's, to one Meg bit chips in the last PC computers to use this RAM technology.

"HIMEM.SYS has detected unreliable memory at address 01C017EE, XMS Driver not installed" We are then informed that, as a result, Windows was not installed. However, when I hit Ctrl-Alt-Del to continue as recommended, most often the PC will ultimately boot into Windows 98 as it should. At one point, I also got a message that there was a bad or missing HIMEM.SYS. I tood a chance that it was not completely corrupted but that there
was a bad spot developing on the HD. I copied the HIMEM.SYS file from the
Windows would put it in a "workable" spot on the HD! I have not seen that bad/ missing file message again. However, we got the "....unreliable XMS memory...." message again. Is this the time to get replacement memory board and replace what's there? (Or maybe pull and reseat the boards on the chance there is a bad contact? I haven't
opened the case yet to see what there is in the way of memory in her PC yet!

Boot from floppy many times. Work OK (uses different OS)

If it was corrupted, may have fixed it.Better procedure. Rename to HIMEM.BAD and extract new copy from Win CD. The "bad spot WON'T get used again.

Parallel systems are becoming a significant computing technology, not only for high performance computing, but also for commodity servers. These systems, however, are often built with communication mechanisms chosen from intuition or anecdotal experience. The goal of my research is to identify core mechanisms which both exploit architectural trends and support real applications. My thesis demonstrates that cache-coherent shared memory hardware is such a core mechanism, even for applications with little data re-use and data-driven synchronization. Overview
CPU speeds double approximately every eighteen months, while main memory speeds double only about every ten years. These diverging rates imply an impending "Memory Wall," in which memory accesses dominate code performance. The Center for Applied Scientific Computing (CASC) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) , in collaboration with the University of Utah Figure 1. The FPGA memory controllers and MAPS of the SRC-6 are an ideal test bed for SMP-based DAO. Standard memory access techniques do not use memory bandwidth effectively. Many researchers anticipate a Memory Wall in which memory accesses imply an absolute performance limit, and improvements in CPU speed provide no performance benefit. Dynamic access optimization (DAO) mechanisms can use the memory system more effectively by changing the order or apparent location of memory accesses from those generated by the issuing program to ones that use the memory system more effectively without changing the results, thus lowering the Memory Wall. This project is extending DAO mechanisms to consider additional memory access issues, such as cache coherency, that arise in symmetric multiprocessors (SMPs). The deliverables of this project include recommended improvements to the compilers, operating systems, and firmware of SMP-based systems. These modifications could be of significant benefit to scientific codes and reduce the run times of many LLNL codes by a factor of three or more without any source code modifications.

  • Memory references within a process are logical addresses dynamically translated to physical addresses at runtime. A process is broken into pages or segments Not all the pages or segments need to be in memory at the same time More processes may be maintained in memory than normally permitted if entire address spaces of processes had to reside in memory Processes can be larger than actual physical memory
Resident set - the pages or segments of a process that are in real memory. Real memory - the actual physical memory of the hardware Virtual memory - the perceived memory space for a process.
Locality
Locality is the reason VM works so well. The nature of program execution is that most often a memory reference is one that has recently been accessed or is one that is very close to a recently accessed location.
